Its a dash out repair, so most of the cost is labour, the core should be cheap enough from a wrecker. There will be a recharge cost and new receiver dryer for the AC if fitted.

I was advised a few years ago by a a/c mechanic to lower the radiator cap kpa.
He had seen quite a few go in his time and believes that 120 is far too high and drops them down to 110 (iirc).

hes probable talking about old holdens which did this...the heater cores were rated lower than the radiator!!

You dont have too, but its a good idea to do it whilst the AC has no gas (u have to displace it when you remove the heaterbox as it is one) The rec/dryer would be 10+ years old, and a fair amount of condensation would be in the system, by replacing it you'll prolong the compressor life and evap! as it will prevent icing etc.

get one from a wreckers shouldn't be too dear but tell them to leave it the core in the box much easier to remove old one and just straight bolt in the new core/box

sounds crazy, but on my first EA which I sold, I busted my heater core by changing the hose that goes to this via the firewall, and didn't fix the core! The car was $500, I don't have the time I used to, so I though fk it! So bypassed it and direct route back to the block, saves another hose too. Aaand yes it's fkn cold here! .. I do love the heater in the new EA S I got tho, so it is better. I think I was quoted a few hundred last year.. main reason I thought fk it.
