Hey everyone im looking for some ideas on whats going on with my car, it's a manual 94 ef gli sedan and has recently begun not starting sometimes when i turn the key.
I have now found through sheer luck that if it won't start, if i honk the horn or turn the headlights on and off it will start, even if i do this while i'm turning the key, honk and simultaneously it starts. Weirdly enough the usual honk or headlight trick wasn't working yesterday when it wouldn't start and somehow i bumped the brake while turning the key and it started simultaneously :? Although it hasn't caused me any trouble yet it seems to be developing new symptoms and i'm worried the next one may not have a quick fix.
Any help will be much appreciated.
Thanks

try flicking hi beam on and off three times followed by pumping the foot brake rapidly while closing the centre console lid. then swear violently and punch the dash hard, quickly followed by a vicious turn of the key and a footward stab on the accelerator. works for me every time....

Hitting the dash doesn't do anything, just the horn and lights so i guess ill have to take it to an auto electrician and see what they have to say, thanks for your help mate

Dont hit the dash, bang the panel with your fist by your left knee while turning the key. This is a bandaid fix that should be fixed asap because it will eventually fail.
If it starts your BCM is kaput

Sounds like the Smart Lock module to me.
It is located under the dash (to the left of the steering column) where the handbrake used to be located for the EAs, etc...
Turn the key and give that area a hard smack at the same time.

Works for me everytime!

Your only going to replace it with another dodgy one or one that soon will be. It is the BCM not the smart lock module. There is another thread going at the moment, have a read.

Look for "car sometimes starts"

they are common to have dry soldered joints inside them (bcm)
sounds like the dry joints are related to the earth, if u can also get it to start with lights and horn

raa and roadside assistance will try turning the lights on when a broken down car is stuck on the side of the road if the battery just went dead. helps the earths get a better contact
id be checking the 3 earths in the engine bay and remove and clean/spray the battery terminals with some crc/wd spray too

Exactly where are all the earths. We hear so many earth related problems it would be good to have a list of where they all are through the whole car.
