I have problems with my car idling for months now - and yes i have replaced and checked everything at much expense.
I think it must be a vacuum leak - i can sometimes hear a slight whistle sound when i let my foot back on the throttle - like when going down a hill or rolling up to the lights. I am not sure if this sound relates to the vacuum leak or not. The question is - how do i find where the leak is coming from? My car is an ef xr6 manual. |

spray the intake manifold with carby clean to find where it is!

Sensible answers only please - this vacuum leak has cost me over $600 in changing parts but with not sucess. The time for jokes is over - I am going to sell the falcon if i cant fix it soon. Wonder if i can get a good trade in on an x pursuit VN commodore. Should be able to get a VT style body kit to suit with the change!

any flamable spary will work jus spray it on sections at a time if ur engine picks up it means its got a vacuum leak.

wat have u changed? if could be as easy as u have left a vacuum hose off somewhere
but yea, just spray carby cleaner all over the intake and listen for a rise is revs or just the carby cleaner being sucked in thats the easiest way

also, try spraying a water/deturgent mix.

I was gunna say use detergent /water mix.... um, a bit more safe than `spray any flammable liquid....' All you want is to momentarily block the leak ( whichh the detergent spray will do) and you will hear the revs rise or maybe a temporary end to the vaccum leak noise... the idea is to pinpoint it down then maybe try some sealant to try and eliminate it...

Thanks all - i will give it a go tonight.
I am not sure whether it is related or not but this morning when i went to drive the car the brake booster was not working. I am assuming it was the brake booster as the pedal felt like a rock - like when the engine is not running. Is it possible that there was/is some kind of leak between the manifold and the booster? |

lol, I was just about to say its your brake booster. Take the hose off the brake booster, and shove a bolt in it, try again... if it idles there you go.
Mate of mine had the same problem. The diaphram on those things goes, and then its a leak. Cheers

Yeh, when the booster went on my waggin, she actually started to idle a little more sensibly! (vac leak)

THanks for the booster advice - i will giove it a go tonight.
Any suggestions on fixing the booster? When you say the diaphram goes are you suggesting i will probably need a new booster? |
