You can probably hear the hydraulic lash adjusters . You can pull them out and service them. You'll need to pick up some new retainers for them, as they're usually buggered when they come out.

While servicing them you may come across one or 2 which are binding, out of shape or different to the rest - these will be the noisy fella's.

If you need replacements, you can usually get a complete rocker assembly from the wreckers for $50 or so which includes the 12 HLA's.

The new retainers are about $10-15 from coventrys. Without these its hard to put the rocker gear back in without dropping them all into the oil galleries :D

Being an ED you may have the EA-ED large HLA's or the smaller EF/EL HLA's, you'll have to sus this out before you go getting replacements. If you've got the EA-ED style it may be worth upgrading to the EF/EL style.. the whole rocker gear is a complete bolt on and I've had far less noise issues with EF/EL style.. mainly due to age I assume.

There are a few types of hydraulic lash adjusters,
Commonly there are the ones with a plastic base retaining the flat surface contact face to the top of the valve or there are the ones with the steel retainer,as you would expect they should be stronger.

My experience has been that the plastic retainer may crack and release the flat surface contact face.

All ED's should have the smaller diameter type, these were brought out mid 93 while the EBII was still out.

All fixed :) It was one of the lash adjusters was loose due to the oring thing being perished. I accually bought the complete EF rocker gear but the lash adusters were worse than the ones in the ED... all except for one which I swapped into the ED rocker.
I will get all new lash adjusters and fit them into the EF rockers and wack them in... I'll wait till I change the cam though... now to find a cam...

Big thanks to Brad for his advice... cheers mate.
