How do i know if i need new ignition leads?

how hard is it to get to where you have to put the leads?

Just make sure you have long arms, thats all as you will have to keep reaching in underneath the Intake Manifold to connect the Leads up to the Dizzy. Also make sure they are numbered or get them numbered as thats what I forgot to do and gee did she cough and splutter or what when I tried starting her up :lol: :lol:

hi

depends what your budget allows

a trip to the local workshop thats equipped with a engine analyser wil confirm defantly if you need leads cap rotor button or coil and any othe associated ignition components

but for the amount they will charge to hookup the car on there equipment will probably cost the same that will buy the leads cap and rotor button in Bosch .

yes you can perform a few tests yourself
yes dissabbling a lead to see if its working is one :wink: be careful ur playing with high voltages and it does give a zapppp

the other is use a multimeter and meassure resistances and check for high resistances and for open circiut leads

check vissually then ends of the leads and distributor cap for corrussion

another method as a last resort is have the engine running at night fall and you may see where the high voltage is leaking to ground a poorly insulated lead will do so ( depending if its exturnal )

Leads are NOT expensive, just replace them!! If you don't know when they where last changed? Then its fair chance they need replacing..You can mega them? But realy ???

well i had problems with my car missing every now and then, so today i changed the plugs and leads and now it still didnt fix the problem...
what else could it be? coils perhaps?
lets just say it is the coils that r no good, is that an expensive job?

Just a correction, bigger doesn't mean more resitance. A bigger cross section in a conductor, reduces the resistance.

As for chaning them, they are a prick, and make you bend your arms in ways you thought not possible. But it definately is doable.

And as for bigger leads, they aren't really needed unless you are htting some big numbers.

EDIT - also to add to the comment about no current flowing... a mutimeter flows current through conductor to check resistance. No current = no resitance... V = IR ohms law, no I, no R, no V.
