Just started the car up after changing heads, and she's running fine and all that. A lot more noisey than it used to be, but considering there was a cam upgradea moungst many other things I presume these are running in noises as it revs up fine and that (let it idle for yonks to get going then once it was warm built the revs up a tad and that).
But there's one noise which just doesn't sound right, sounds like the timing chain maybe knocking/scraping somewhere? just wondering what are the chances that the chain skiped a tooth or something on either of the bottom cogs when I was doing this (definately no way it skiped on the cam cog as there were three cable ties holding this there). Gunna take the rocker cover off to see I think, as it's got me worried! |

with the bottom tension guide there isn't enough room for the chain to come off the bottom (crankshaft) cog and clear the teeth.
The scraping noise could be the tensioner not correctly engaged or a guide not sitting in its place.

were pretty sure that we got the tensioner done right (used my new genuine Ford Service/Repair manual). it's a brand new one too (see my other thread on broken timing chain tensioner). but i'll be able to tell you guys in a little while what the go is, baought to take the rocker cover off now that I've eaten!
chain is definately tight from the tensioner though, double checked that. so long as it can't easily have sliped on the bottom cogs then I think this is hopefully just a weird running in noise that will go away! |

so the noise sounds like the chain rubbing on something? or more like whiplashing around?
Cheers

well i took the rocker cover off again today and ran the car with it off (got a 15 second movie of it if anyone can host), chain seems fine, we've got no f**k idea what the noise is, but mechanically everything is running fine - i've had the engine going for about 20 minutes total now and nothings gone queer yet except the noise so I'm gunna take it for a test drive and hope for the best.

and all you did was change the head?
did you try to move the chain, and see how loose it is, with a screw driver or something? Cheers

strange... If you have a good look down there, you can't see any guides broken?
Cheers

What cam are you using?
Ive recently suffered the same problem, and it turns out to be "cam backlash". My engine builder changed all the timing gear TWICE,trying to find the noise [engine under warranty] and now wants to bill me for it, cause he didnt supply the cam.

Wade Cam 1636. it's a regrind so can that be the issue?
It's very strange! The guides and that are fine! Last edited by twr7cx on Thu Dec 29, 2005 5:54 pm, edited 1 time in total. |

when i removed the rocker cover to do the headone of the rocker arms had a chip missing (the Hydrolic Lash Adjuster and shims were still in there nice and tight but and it looked like it had been like that for a while (it's probnably been almost a year since I changed the cam shaft - which is the last time I removed the rocker cover prior to this - and at that time it was fine, so it's cracked any time between now and then).
Anyways, had a good search for this missing chunk, checked everywer3e and kept rechecking each time something else was removed. Never found it but. Hoping it's sitting in the bottom of my sump not causing any trouble, but it may somehow be the cause of my troubles? I replaced the broken rocker arm but and aside from that all the HYLA and shims and rocker arms are ace! Took the car for a drive, done about 30km's now and no issues, drives fine! |
