I just took the airbox out and gained access to them but now how do I figure out if they are blown or not?

The top priority in my experience with falcons is to ensure the radiator is clean.

Another thing to note is that when talking about where the guage sits we may need to be sure we're talking about the same guage. The guage in my EBII and XG are the same, but are different to those in fairmonts, and the one shown in the picture of the EF dash a few posts above.

My XG has had the cooling system fully overhauled and it sits pretty steady around 1/4 to 1/3, and heavy usage so far doesn't see the guage rise above 1/3, which is how cars should be. One-third sees the guage dead horizontal, a deliberate meaure by ford i reckon.

Yep it is hard to know between all the different model clusters. Unless we all get actual temp gagues we arnt really going to be able to figure out the average temp.

But anyway, I pulled out the airbox and got to the relays. Found an internet site that shows exactly how to test them..

http://www.autoshop101.com/forms/hweb2.pdf

Using the method with the light tester I found that relay 3 (from the left) was rooted - it clicked but wasnt sending the current :D

I changed that one with a new one and bamb! Both thermos working great! :D

So if anyone has a problem with the thermo fan closest to the airbox in their EF, it'll be relay number 3. I'm about to go for a cruise and I'll report back with the average operating temp.

Thanks to everyone who replied and for all the help.

Ok, normal operating water temperature is about 80o and on the standard (Low Series) GLi cluster the temp needle sits directly between the O & M. When the car's idling the temp goes up to about 90o and fluctuates between 80o and 90o any other time.

Really glad I got that fan fixed up.

Hope this thread can be of use to anyone else having the same problem.

Nice end result.

P.S
that pic I posted is an EL Ghia dash
as mentioned dashs veriy between cars, i.e EA/EB/ED low/mid/high series and EF/EL (all same), which is why I used the service dash to give degree readings.

I know about the gear oil cooling and all that --- And the fans work... Cannot work out why car starts overheating (up to O-R when stuck in traffic after an 15 minutes of motorway 100km/h +)

Do the fans have more than one speed setting? Maybe they're stuck at low RPM's? Maybe the slightly dodgy looking oil radiator out front needs replacing? Maybe the water pump isn't pumping properly?

What the hell... Have had two of these EF's overheat and blow things already, so would prefer to turn climate control on full blast hot when it gets anywhere near the HOT mark than leave it to its own devices...

If your fans have a problem with them and the motors on them are running then it has to be 2 of the 4 relays. If you have 2 bluw ones and 2 grey ones it'll be the blue ones.

Could be any of those things but

- If the water pump was gone your car wouldnt cool down at all
- Radiator can be rooted/clogged with s**t

There has to be a reason why the car isnt functioning as it should. Over time I imagine that they do start you run a little hotter but not so hot that it is going to significantly reduce engine life, which IMO will happen constantly having the car run hot.

Venting the heat through the air con ducts will work, by another more practical way would be to install working rear facing bonnet vents.

Yeahp. Was looking at the bonnet vent thing as all that hot air from fans goes straight over the intake piping. The radiator is brand new, but was thinking maybe the water pump was a little dodgy, not completely blown. Mind you - it isn't leaking any water. Hmmm... Like your face lift plastics in front of wheel in signature by the way..! And -- Is that colour the original Ford silver / blueish tinge or something you've made up?

Thanks mate, which plastics are you refering to?

Yep that's the original Ford colour 8-) It's actually quite a nice colour surprisingly... gonna give it a spray in a few months after I get the engine sorted

Does the service mode in high-series clusters give the water temp to the degree?

EDIT: That 60 - 75 jump vid is awesome! What place did you go with for your Stage 5 head?

hmm, why do this, they are meant to run at 91c i think you will find your car will run thru fuel a little more trying to achieve the normal temp.

But maybe you have a different ecu or whatever...
