I aslo have an 81deg thermostat, and i have no problems. It does not chew fuel, my car is actually very good on fuel. I always average about 10l per 100, and this is mostly round town with a bit of a stab every now and then.

Do the fans have more than one speed setting? Maybe they're stuck at low RPM's? Maybe the slightly dodgy looking oil radiator out front needs replacing? Maybe the water pump isn't pumping properly? What the hell... Have had two of these EF's overheat and blow things already, so would prefer to turn climate control on full blast hot when it gets anywhere near the HOT mark than leave it to its own devices... In the 1st paragraph you say that it overheats after 15mins on the hwy, check the auto fluid level/condition, this will more than likely be the problem.

But maybe you have a different ecu or whatever... Yea, I know standard they have a 91c, however I would recomend, and use a 81c in my EL because of the extra heat that the auto puts on the cooling system. Maunals would be fine with a 91c thermostat. I have noticed no problems in the running of the car, I would actually say that it runs smoother with the 81 in. Hope that helps

I wonder if everyone that modifies their engine and even those that don't ought to be putting in a three core radiator.

Uhm... The whole thing should have read that it overheats when stuck in traffic AFTER being on the motorway. If that's any clearer?!!? I think you got the picture anyway, just making sure. My technical writing skills are somewhat crap. Thanks for the thought. I know the auto box is getting pretty knackered and although I put some more fluid in to bring its level up, I've not completely changed it as was going to replace the whole box with another. The other thing there is the trans cooling radiator out the front. May replace it with a better looking unit when the bumper next gets taken off too. Bloody good of you - thanks heaps for that. Now all I've got to do is find where the intermittent petrol smell is coming from. Charcoal box under front left guard looks okay... May start a new "GOD HELP ME" thread in 6 Cylinder Workshop and see if there's any takers on that particular dilemma. CHEERS! I am running a 72 deg. thermostat & a 3 core radiator. On a cold day the engine temp. is around the first line. Warm weather the needle is in between the first line & L. Very hot weather the needle is in between the L & M & will go down under the L on the freeway & high speed fan operation but never ever over M.
Also i am running external trans cooler & 50% mix nulon coolant. All Good.

^^ I find mine is sitting on no(R)mal after stopping for a while on a good drive on hot days.
Just driving back up the road gets the thing cooler |

i have autometer guages and my el 5 litre sits on 180F (82) on normal days and gets to 210 (98) on hot days. Is this too hot? Also i dont recommend bypassing the trans oil from the radiator.

As hot as it has been here I've been stuck in peak hour traffic just tonight and it never got over M maybe got to it, doing a lot better than my EB ever did. maybe time for some new coolant?
