I'd port match the intake and head by gasket or somthing.
Get it cleaned out schmicko. (Try get a XR head with the bigger exhaust valves) I'd regrind the valves. New stem seals. heavy duty or XR springs (they are heavy duty, hence it would be an idea to get a XR head from the start). I only say get these cos even though standards might work ok you wanna do a job properly and not risk damage I your gonna do this much work. Either a 977B or a custom grind cam to get what you want exactly. The shims out of another head (if you get the regrind 977B) the multi layer steel AU head gasket (factory ford I think) if you feel brave play around with a die grinder and see what else you can clean up, there plenty of threads on that. New timing kit if you have the extra cash and get the adjustable cam gear for a bit of pull factor (cos you never end up seeing it lol) and if you wanna get serious with playing around with tuning. (although it would be a pain in the a** removing the rocker cover constantly to adjust an test it) I think that covers a full head job...

haha. lols. well AU heads have the same exaust ports dont they? my car has a J3 in it so i suppose i can go bigger if the auto will allow?

AU heads are the same I'm sure, just a different cam and possibly lifter setup but your J3 amd a custom cam will fix all that. I'm pretty sure EA-AU heads all interchange and bolt on just bolt on bits are different. I heard a sweet a** 4.0 on the weekend dyno day. Get in contact with trav_4.0 I think it is. Had a custom cam and was auto, nice sound like what I want for mine. I got 119 Kw at the wheels (160 Hp) with mine. I'll update the thread soon so check it out.

Yes they will bolt on, u need to use the au cam and rocker gear as there different to e series

But it's also what's leaning me slightly to an EL engine. It'll bolt in with my acessories on the block and head. It's not a great as an AU engine but even that difference is marginal

Yes it was, just wasn't as clear as could have been.
Use an AU head if you intend on spending money on it, then get a cam to suit. Just be aware that AU's have different rocker ratio to E series hence aren't interchangable.
