Don't buy the kit until you pull it down would be my advice, pistons and bores might be fine, you might be able to get away with a hone and rings.

yeah i agree i think the bores will be fine as the compression isnt terrible and it holds it once its up
wouldnt i still be better off getting new pistons though if im going to put some decent power through it??
either way im going to do bearings
how much would just a cylinder hone cost??
also is that a good price for that stuff??

scratch the last prices i got a better quote from repco
6MKRY9414S Pistons + Rings + Pins $399
7M2092H Main bearing set $90
6B2150H Conrod bearing set $40
BR520GTR Head gasket $45

for some reason acl dont make gasket kits for my car :x
the other guys solution was to get me to buy a kit where everything but the head gasket would fit this means in wasting $50 on a usless head gasket
does anyone know of anywhere that makes the gasket kits With or W/O head gasket for my model

Repco quoted me $700 for pistons, rings, pins, all bearings (big end and main), full gasket and seal kit With head gasket. All ACL race series gear, but i've been told that the ford AU head gasket is one of the best ones. Do the lot mate theres nothing your ford will love more than a fresh rebuild, especially with some flat tops and big cam. ( TYRE DESTRUCTION ).

Been pondering a rebuild myself.
Just one thing id like to know.
Do ACL make std rebuild kits that fit strait up to the block? No machining required?

Or will it all depend on the block itself?

If the rings are just tired, and the bore measures up within specs then you can get away with a light hone and put new STD size rings in it and be done.
If it is a bit too worn, or the hone opens up the piston clearance too much, then you need machining, bored out to the next size and new oversize pistons.
Thta's why you don't buy the kit until you know if the bores are gonna need machining or not.

Those prices sound pretty reasonable to me...

Nice reply. Thanks carnut :)
Also, is there a rough estimate on how much a workshop would charge for work on the block?

Can I ask whether anyone here has had good/bad experiences with ACL? I haven't used their gear before and have seen set ups that worked, but heard a fair bit of bad stuff about their cast line of pistons regarding s**t ringlands amongst other things? (Not sure whether this is just a case of only hearing the bad though).

Apparently their forged stuff is from the US and actually another brand though (Mahle I think?) and meant to be pretty good.

Used ACL rings and bearings etc before, but never pistons.
Was pretty good stuff.
My favourite is Federal Mogul if I can get it.

Haven't had a block rebored for ages ( as in over ten years...) not really up on current prices there...
Do remember that around that time it was $180 to regrind a 4 cylinder crankshaft and about $250 for a six...haven't done any rebuilding or got any machining done for quite a while...
Last couple of engines I worked on in a major way like that were diesel tractor motors, since then I have only done head gaskets and engine swaps and so forth ( was given too many running engines for free to bother rebuilding one) but I'm about to get back into it again now I have a proper workshop ( other thing, rebuilding engines in a garden shed is a right pain...).
