basically ever since ive had the car its allways had a slight miss at idle
ive done eveything in the book to fix it
i just did a compression test and its taking over 10 cranks to get to max compression
i put a few drops of oil in one cylinder and cranked it. it only took about 4 cranks
they are all holding compression perfectly

does this mean its the rings not a burnt valve

if so i was going to put a reco ported head on anyway so i guess ill have to do a full rebuild :x

how much can i expect for a set of pistons and rings?
is it worth getting forged or are the cast ones ok? supercharging isnt going to happen
also how much to get the block honed?

should i do anything else while its apart like main bearings, crank ????

a firly aggresive cam will be going into it so id like to make sure its reliable

I just had a motor done, get it bored, but get pistons first. get your crank linished and get the machine shop to fit your pistons to rods. I got a complete head rebuild as well including pressure testing, all up cost me $640 inc GST, paid extra for crack testing on the rods.

ACL kit was about $800. they will spin tank the block and head worthwhile giving them the crank case and anything else you want cleaned.

lol i had a slight miss at idle the well never really went away thru the revs.

apparently my engine had a cracked piston, worn rings and 2 burnt valves...

does your engine run hot, or get upto running temp REALLY quickly?

ive beent old thats a sign of a burnt valve

get a full rebuild kit (around $600) plus $150 for a new timing kit..

I don't think u will need new pistons..just get them cleaned by a shop and reoiled at the rods..

$400 should cover the labour needed by the shop (Cleaning block, pistons, crank, rebore? etc..)

then just put it together yourself..might aswell change some parts while u got it out of the car aswell..waterpump, cam, head work etc..

or if your lazy, just buy a second hand au motor for $700?

If your going to keep the car for a few yrs then do a proper rebuild of the whole engine as it it will pay off in the long run.

i was thinking i would do a proper rebuild as im going to have that car for years
so i should expect around a grand for the rebuild kit and machining
what would be included in the kit

I was quoted $2800.00 for a full rebuild and that means everything and i think that included a balance as well. This quote was from a race engine builder so no shortcuts or anything.

so do i acutally need new pistons or just the rings
wouldnt i be better off getting 20thou oversize ones and getting the block honed to match
also should i replace the rods/pins/crank/bearings
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=270340790503
would those fit my car are they any good or do i need oversize ones

when you pull the engine down inspect the bores for scoring and lips, depending on the size of both will be the pistons size you need, a stadard bore your looking at probably 20 thou over, so then you need 2o thou pistons, if you have significant scoring or badly lipped bores you may need to go for 50 thou over, its not really a decision you can make until you have inspected the block.

My block was in pretty good nick so i was able to go 20 thou over with some nice acl race series pistons, I chose 10cc dish tops, but I am going turbo, remembering that a slight dish is a slight drop in comp. you may want to look for flat tops and get them butterfly cut for valve clearance. gives you a little more compression.

pretty much any rebuild kit off the shelf is going to contain pistons, these will come with rings to suit, just need to confirm hat material type you would like to have.
