cat converters burn unburnt fuel, they heat up real nice and hot (500 degrees) and burn it as it goes through.
I paid $220 (fitted) for a 2 1/2 inch cat.

I paid $220 (fitted) for a 2 1/2 inch cat. no they dont, un-burnt feul will melt the catilist in the cat. it convert oxides of nitrogen to nitrogen and oxygen, that oxygen can the be used to burn unburnt feul. it also uses that oxygen to convert carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide. that is a 3-way cat a 2way cat could not convert oxides of nitrogen to produce it's own oxygen, so AIR INJECTION was used (like that found on early unleaded lasers) to give the cat oxygen to burn unburnt feul and turn carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide |

ok the three main polutiants from you tail pipe are oxides of nitrogen. (NOx, NO1 NO2 NO3 NO4 blah blah blah) hydrocarbons (un-burnt fuel) carbon monoxide CO. a three way cat converts NOx into the basics, Nitrogen and Oxygen it then uses the oxygen to convert CO into the less harmful CO2 carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide. not all of the oxygen is used to convert the CO into CO2 and the left over oxygen is used to burn the hydrocarbons the old 2-ways couldn't convert NOx so they needed AIR INJECTION. |

in other words if you dont have a cat installed its going to smell like crap, put more harmfull gasses into the atmosphere and on the better note give you a little more power- just beware of the 10000 fine if your caught

A high-flow one can be found on Ebay for 200-300 pingers. Not much of an improvement if you're not pushing huge numbers though.

Paid $300 fitted including new 2.5in flanges. It was a MEGAFLOW HIGHFLOW 2.5in Catalytic Converter.
Megaflow 2.5in Cat: $250 Fitting Costs: $50 including labour and 2 new 2.5in flanges, makesure they modify the 2.25in flange that attaches to the gearbox support bar. I have seen a few dodgy operaters that weld a new 2.5in flange on the extractors side but just keep the standard factory 2.25in flange on the muffler side. |
