i am currently doing a AU convo on a mates EF, now the drama i have is that he has taken the head off and im stuck as to how to find TDC, i need to do this to changa over the spark thingy( yes thats the tec. term) and put into the AU engine. any help would be great! i know how to do it with the head on using the timing mark, but im unsure as to how to determine weather it is on the comp stroke when the piston is all the way up

yes when the No.1 piston is at the top, it is TDC on compression stroke.

yar, u can get a magnetic gauge to put on the top of your block with a little pin thingy that turns a dial as the piston comes up and pushes the pin and tells you when the pistion has reached maximum height, out of interest which piston is piston number one? the one at the front of the block or the one closest the bellhousing?

Or it could be TDC on the exhaust stroke... :P
Cam and dizzy/cam angle sensor rotate at 1/2 speed.
4 stroke engines are tricky I know guys!

The mark in the chain should be a bit above the head on the right hand side on comp stroke I think.
It's either that or timing chain cover off.
You can't really guess it either.
Actually it's EF, you could guess it, cam angle sensor is only the sync signal, it might just inject 180 degrees out?
Maybe, I got NFI..
They are waste spark anyway so ignition will be fine.
You got a 1 in 2 chance of being right

edit: AU already has cam angle sensor, I think its same as EF anyway, so you don't have to take it out... unless you already did, in which case see above re: guessing.

Just extending on that, realised EF are still bank injection anyway.
Cam angle sensor being 180 has no major ill iffect that I can think of.
So it doesn't matter, long as its in at a TDC.

Line the balancer up with the TDC marking on the timing case, 1st and 6th piston are at the top while the rest of the pistons are down.

With the head off you should get someone to stick the end of a T-bar through the cam sprocket hole (assuming sprocket and chain are still on the engine). Get them to push it up a little to act like the sprocket is connected to a camshaft and then rotate the balancer until you get TDC. I was told if you rotate the engine without the head on you might snap some guides. Nothing wrong with precautions.

Make sure cam sprocket has it's timing marking to the right of the engine (inlet side), balancer lined up with timing case TDC marking and pistons 1 and 6 at top.

That is how I remember mine being at TDC when I did a headgasket change. (refer to image below)

thanks ffor the info but i know how to get TDC, but i wanted to know how to tell if its on comp stroke or not, the reason behind this is so i put the electronic ignition into the AU engine it would be at the same point so the tming was right.

but i sorted it out and steady you had the same thinking as me with the little notch in the cam gear i got to approx level where the head would be and bobs your uncle it works, its all running now but with a big pinging. i
