hi all, i no there are threads everywhere on how to set your timing, but none of them seem to make much sence, hence the reason for this thread. so basically i want to know how to set the timing on an ed cos i have done it all by the book, i got it up to operating temperature, turned the car off, shorted the two pins and started the car back up. when the car starts up again the idle rmp doesnt mova at all, then about 2 or 3 seconds after it almost stalls and then the rev's pick back up. i assume that this is what is supposed to happen but when i go to actually check the timing it still fluctuates like the computer is still adjusting the timing . i am not sure if this how it is supposed to work but i dont see how you could get the timing acurate when it is doing this. so any help would be greatfull.
chees, Tomo.

It sounds as if the ISC valve is playing up, clogged up, throttlebody may need cleaning, split in the MAP hose, clogged PCV valve, ECU playing up, O2 sensor playing up, PSPS playing up, reset base idle speed.......need to check all of these.

if its timing alone you want to set. start with a timing light and a a few minor turns of the dizzy to specs. by the sounds of it your trying to do an ecu re-learn or ISC learn (post972724.html?hilit=resetting base idle#p972724). from what ive read the car may stall during a ISC/base idle re-learn (maybe then adjust the stop screw) but just start it back up and dont touch the pedal

thanks for that cjh i will check all these different area's, cjh according to the book i have to short out pins A and B in the diagnostics connector while the car off after it has reached normal operating temperature, then i have to start the car again and go from there after the RPM picks up, my problem is i dont think it supposed to almost stall, i think the RMP is supposed to rise to about 1500 ish to indicate that it is in self diagnostic mode and it is not doing this.
sorry if this makes no sence as i am a bit drunk cos it is my birthday as of about half an hour ago lol. cheers, Tomo.
