Hi
I got my EB GL about a month ago, and it goes so much harder than my previous EB Fairmont. When the tacho gets over 2000rpm the engine kicks in and revs hard through to 5000rpm. I suspect it has a cam in it. Either that or the Fairmont was just useless. I am changing the Rocker Cover gasket tomorrow afternoon. Is there any way of identifying if a cam has been installed previously? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Regards BenJ

If it starts and runs it has a cam installed

Well... If the engine goes then that's a pretty good sign it has a cam in it, it is a fairly important part of the engine ...Sorry, couldn't resist edit: dammit, I mull over my posts too long. kempster beat me to it Seriously though, as I understand it, a cam is only really good when installed in conjunction with other mods (intake, exhaust etc). If the engine is otherwise stock then I'd say it more than likely wouldn't have a cam in it. If, on the other hand, there's evidence of other modifications being performed then it may be a possibility.

Well I left myself wide open for that one.
The exhaust on the car when I got it had the rear muffler removed and the pipe looked bigger than the one I used to have on the fairmont. I have a Red Back 2.5" cat back exhaust on it now. It used to be on the Fairmont but oddly they both sound different too. The previous owner has added a thermo fan conversion (aftermarket) not ef/el. Question still stands. Is there a way to identify if there is a 'performance' cam fitted to an existing engine, while the rocker cover is off? BenJ

It may have some marks or numbers identifying who made or ground it but other than that I can't think of any other way to determine if it's not stock short of having it measured.
GL you say? Is it multi-point or central fuel injected? 3.8, 3.9 or 4.0L?

Sorry, it's a 4.0L multipoint engine Non Smartlock car
It looks like I might have to get it dynoed to see if it is not stock. Regards BenJ

the ONLY 100% way to tell if your car has a cam is to take teh cam out and get it put on a machien that can read teh cam lobes
then compare those readings to the factory cam specs sound and performance are not the answer ok if the car does a 13 sec 1/4 yes it has a cam LOL
