i need some help, i have a feeling my map sensor is rooted, i am pulling 18-22l/100km, new leads, new plugs, new oil. it has nothing to do with my driving, because the easier i take it, the more it guzzles. (the car has never been close to the redline whilst ive owned it).
this is really pissing me off. 50 dollars of fuel gets me 220 km. WHAT THE HELL! so anyone with any experience, or who can offer some help, please, please post! the car is a 2000 au2 fairmont vct. the economy was bad before, but worse now.

Hehe, welcome to my world. Nah, seriously.... It may be that you have a vacuum leak. Id recommend getting a vac gauge on there, should be around 20inches/hg at idle. Alternatively, disconnect the MAP sensor... if there's no change then fair to assume the MAP aint doing much....

I had a MAP sensor fail on my EA. We found it was the problem by swaping it with one off another car.

Yeah, same here too. I hear ya! Still trying to sort it out myself. I have been absolutely babying my car over the last few days. Premium fuel, New spark plugs, oil, air filter, fuel filter, ISC gasket, throttle body gasket and the trip computer reads 21.3 goddamit! I've bought an intake manifold gasket and will be replacing that when I get time, and then leads after that. Grrrr. Wish I could help...lol... |

I thought my AU VCT mtr was bad at 14L per 100ks.
I replaced my aftermart BMC panel filter to a new ryco one and the display on the C/C panel reads between 11.7 to 13.5 around the city and 9.0 to 10.5 on country driving now. I keep the economy on the tranny all the time on. I average over 450+ on a tank around town & sometimes over 700ks country driving. I think the AU VCT mtrs should get about 400+Ks around the city if things are running correct. ghiaman |

One thing I have noticed with my car. Accelerating the instant fuel consumption seems to be the same as my mates almost identical car. The main difference seems to be when cruising or backing off.
When he is crusing he can have the thing sit on about 6 L/100km and when backed off it goes right down to 1-2 L/100km. Mine seems to hover at about 8-9 L/100km when backed off and will cruise at around 11 L/100km! So obviously it is injecting fuel when there is no need, something has to be causing this. Does yours do the same thing when you have it set to "Instant L/100km"? |

pretty much... most of the time, the inst is 11+, when im cruising in the city its NEVER below 9, normally 11-13, highway, 8-14.
i havent paid much attention other than that, but will find out. as for ecu reset, i have disconnected the battery and am waiting, anything i should be wary about when restarting it?

The only thing when reconnecting will be the radio code, and it will idle a little rough till it learns.

Yeah just turn the steering wheel back and forth a bit, put it in D (if auto) and N for a bit, turn aircon on/off a couple times.... just so the ECU knows what to do when these loads are placed on the engine.

ecu reset seemingly ok. will be taking it out for a test soon. the map sensor is the unit which bolts onto the throttle body, correct, 2 phillips screws hold the unit in place, a 3 pin plug connecting it to the harness?
if the ecu reset doesnt help, ill see if disconnecting the map sensor completely and see if that has any effect.
