‘Flicking the speedo’ is illegal. If found guilty sellers have to pay a hefty fine, compensate the buyer for the inflated value of the car and cover legal costs. In the case of the 427,000 kilometre wind back, the fine, compensation and costs amounted to almost $5,000.)
reffering to SELLING. Not for your own private use as long as you tell everyone involced. Duty of disclosuer. |

I guess the state goverment office of fair trading is wrong! haha At some point you will sell the car, when you do you have committed a crime, hope they lock you up!
You really have no f**k idea! and you don't know me so stop trying to pretend too. Iv'e been around cars for a f**k long time, my experiance comes from doing not asking questions and reading a forum. When I learnt there wasn't even an internet, so f**k off. If you had half a brain you would have done a search on the web and found all the info you needed without coming here to ask people questions on how to illegally tamper with a odometer. LEAVE MY MOTHER OUT OF THIS, LET HER REST IN PEACE, C***.

Your a legend in your own glove box. Mr Know NOTHING. |

jeezus and i thought my 17 year old friends were bad. But honestly dude madmax has been around cars alot longer then you have. If your not gonna at least consider his advice then i would consider you slightly stupid, just think of it as constructive critisism or something
As for setting the odometer back you could prolly do it yourself if your dealing with an electric odometer. There is a EEPROM chip on the back of the cluster (see the pic below from Xyphoid's doco) and you may be able to simply replace it, although im guessing you would need proper mounting tools to do so since its surface mounted. But try it youself that way you learn more <img src="http://www.fordmods.com/Images/EEPROM.jpg"> If its a analouge counter im guessing you might just be able to crack it open and turn it back Finding that specific EEPROM might be a little hard also, but my take on it is if your willing to put the time and money into it you'll learn alot more then you will by just taking it to someone who can do it for you!! |

And just how long have I been around cars do you have ANY IDEA? You don't know anything about me and yet you are saying madmax has been around cars longer then me. How do you know this? are you psychic? As for his advice, I did consider it. That is why I went straight to the Department to find out the TRUTH of the matter. It showed his advice was CRAP. Further still I found that shop that another member who came here with the genuine intent of helping instead of just giving s**t gave me. It was very helpful. Not only did that place show me exactly how to do it they also didn't charge me. Also they pointed out exactly what the department of transport said. As long as I don't sell the car and I disclose the original K's to insurance companies or anyone else that asks I haven't broken and laws. |

I used to and occasionally still do work on instrument and odometer repairs on different instrument clusters.
You need a statutory declaration if you want to wind back the k's. I zero'd my ute's odometer myself. A rebuild that has cost in excess of $20,000, not to mention the time involved. I would wind it to its original km if i went to sell it, but i don't EVER plan on selling it so i don't care.

as far as selling the car goes the easiest way to do that is to wind back a replacement and keep the original as it is and it must be sold with the car with the original k's on it. that is what i found from qld transpor twhen i did a new cluster on an escort about 10 years ago. hope this is some help.

btw madmax, qld has different laws to vic and nsw/everywhere (qt is the softest transport office i know of... like you buy your car, and never need a roadworthy till you sell it... sweet!). much better imho, even though i have always thought any tampering was illegal, you learn many a thing from strange people. we all just need to relax

it is not illegal to wind back an odometer per se....
why do people treat the odometer as this sacred item? you can fix whatever you like but dont touch the precious odometer!!!! the only crime that some r breaking is fraud!! if u wind the odometer back with the intent to defraud then u r commiting a crime..... as long as he is not trying to pass the car off (defraud) to the buyer as original k's he is fine...
