Hi,
Just want to know how would you go on about cleaning your exhaust system? Couldn't find any threads that would answer my question. Any products or any procedures to clean inside of the exhaust system in the pipes and all the other components after the Header/Extractors to the Tip. Thanks.

Most people wouldn't contemplate cleaning the inside of the exhaust, which is probably why there's a lack of information on the net. If the pipe has got rust and carbon deposits flaking off inside, then it's probably on the way out.
But if have to do it, then you'll need to remove the exhaust, give it a tap in a few places with a hammer and blow it out with compressed air (muffler will need to be off too). The only product I've used in the past is Wynns Spitfire, but that's more for cleaning the combustion chambers. I used to fill expansion chambers, on 2-stroke motorcross exhausts, with gas and ignite it to clean out carbon deposits. Definitely not something I'd try on car exhausts though.

when i got my second hand pacemakers, I used oven cleaner in a can. Its a highly caustic spray, and it makes you cough uncontrollably. You can get it in the supermarket.
I sealed off the collector end, and sprayed the foam down all the primaries untill it worked its way down. I left it overnight and then hosed it out. It peeled a lot of carbon off the sides that degreaser, turps and metho couldnt get rid of. But doing it to the exhaust wouldnt really achieve anything. Maybe clean up the tip, but nothing more.

unless the car it came off was pumping oil out the exhaust??
it wont make any difference, as within 100km it will be back to what it is now.. |

Are there any signs that you can see if it was pumping oil out?

wipe your finger inside the pipe and if its greasy there was some oil if its just black and sooty its just carbon..
although an engine would have to be pretty bad to oil up the exhaust.. my previous exhaust was loaded with oil when the old engine died and after i fitted the new engine it just blew a little smoke for a day or so.. so i just took it on the freeway and kept the car in 3rd for about 5 mins reving at about 3000rpm and it all burnt and cleared out... otherwise i guess you could try clean it out, but i think there is no point... |

I wish you could just unload the jiff bottle in there .
Thanks guys for the answers. I thought there would be a way to do this and also i thought it might have been a common practice.

no sorry it appears that nobody here is that 4n4l retentive or tight 4ssed when it comes to exhaust so no answers here.
i hear key-bangers work awsome though.

Don't bother cleaning the inside...you will never see it.
With the outside of the exhaust, you can just sand the rust part back...if you have to sand a lot of the metal back to even get rid of the rust, I suggest you turf that exhaust and buy a new one. phong =P~
