On wednesday morning I killed my motor on the way to work. I came out of street and decided to stretch its legs by revving in to 6000rpm in 1st then to 5800rpm in 2nd backed off to just cruise then, stopped at a set of lights, took off slowly go to 1800rpm then heard a terrible clanging noise and missfire so I shut down the motor and had to get towed home. Once home I pulled the rocker cover off all looked good pulled the spark plugs out got to no:4 and it was tough to remove continued anyway, once out the end of the spark plug was smashed up, pulled the rocker gear off and no:4 exhaust valve spring reached max lift GREAT! :evil: pulled the head off on friday night and to my suprise the valve broke at the base of stem got squashed into a C shape and smashed all the top of the piston (no bore damage). The head will need some chamber repair, new valve seat and re-cut the spark plug hole thread.
I called a mate who has my original ED motor that was rebuilt by Crescent motosport. My mate had the engine sitting on a stand for the last 3 years, made him an offer as he wanted to get rid of it since he lost interest and I picked it up for a bargain. So once the head is repaired I'll be doing a motor swap and be back on the street but this time It'll be 6000rpm safe.

Not good to hear buddy.

Troyman, I believe that block was the one he had in the ED, and was an EF XR engine originally. I think he still has the EL Ticky donk tucked safely away.

So fill me in as to why your surprised it died after hitting 6k? Do you have (had lol) a worked motor or something?

I thought the E series have rev limiters.

I got an EL tickford head you could have for a modest fee if your interested. prolly need a skim, as any head would anyway.

Bad luck, at least nothing exited from the block, so that's a bonus...lol

6000 rpm, that means you have either had the limiter removed or lifted.

theres not much point lifting the limiter on a stock cam, since they run out of puff early on in the piece, so Im assuming it has an aftermarket cam?

If its after market, what sort of lift does it produce?

I assume when you say "spring reached max lift" that it suffered coil bind?

At least it packed up under 2 grand, i reckon id be picking up the pieces if something let loose around 6, better luck with the next one.

from what i know! his car has a ported tickford head, cms stage 3 cam and a j3 chip.
so 6000rpm isnt, well shouldnt be a problem??
it looks like there was a cam lift or cam timing issue to do that??
unless the valve itself has failed or the collets let go?

Ben J and Troyman are on the money with details about my motor.
To mine and the engine shop I use have put it down to a weak valve, revving the motor to 6000rpm has found its weak spot and fractured the valve and was just a matter of time before it broke off.
Once the chamber in the head is fixed up I'll be using stainless steel valves for durability but not that i'll be revving it to 6k again.
I pulled the replacement motor down yesterday for an inspection all looks good, engine shop is going to deck the block hopefully this arvo as there is what looks like a hammer head dent next to no:2 bore where the head bolt goes on the intake side.

*Once the motor is run in (2000km?) put it on the dyno & back to the creek hoping for a low 14sec pass.
I will post up pics soon and report back on the process of the build.

6000rpm is alot for a street driven falcon.. useualy dont need those kind of revs to get going!.. 5500rpm would be more sensible..

6000rpm is a a bit, but as an example
i got my rev limiter on my au vct engine set to 6000rpm and hits the limiter daily..

it has been reved to 6800rpm and was till maving power but the torque droped off long before that.
i guess being forced it forces power beyond the torque band.
torque wise i think it could go as far as 6200rpm but i keep it at 6000rpm.
this obviously dont work as well na....

update: block and timing cover was decked 5 thou last night, head has been disassembled to our suprise 5 out of 6 valves guides were worn?? were replaced 10,000km ago, got oil, am putting it down to unburnt/burnt fuel getting stuck on valve stem (running heaps rich before J3 chip).
Head will be getting some attention next week, so hopefully this time next week its ready for assembly.

were the guides replaced with cast guides or did they use k-line bronze liners?

p.s. what stainless valves are u planning on running?
