Hey guys, in the last couple of days i have noticed a humming noise when traveling over 45 km/h. It's almost like a 'whine' sound. The sound disappears when the car is idling, and I can't seem to hear anything when I check under the bonnet. Everything else appears normal i.e the engine is running cool, transmission shifting correctly and the engine running smooth. I also haven't noticed any leaks coming from the car.

I have recently had the front wheel bearings replaced, new rotors and brake pads on the front. I have had the head gasket replaced earlier in the year, along with new lifters. The entire car is stock, except for the tickford rims.

Any ideas or suggestions?

BTW it's a 95 EF Futura.

Is it from the front or rear of the car? if front it may be the front tyres are corragated or feathered,causing a whine type noise,or maybe the bearings werent greased properly and are wearing.
If the noise is from the rear it may be the diff on its way out,side gears ,crown wheel and pinion worn,these are just possible problems,hope that helps,cheers...Vito.

Thanks for the suggestions. As far as I can tell its coming from the front end, but I can't be certain.
Being a final year mechanical engineering student I wanted to see how the wheel bearings were replaced, so I'm fairly certain they were done correctly. I'm just thinking it might be the new tires I had put onto the rear of the car, as it wasn't doing this before. Being low profile they might be a little noisier than stock. Just an idea.

Yeah some tires can be noisy at times,are they rotational tyres as in they have to go a certain way,if so arethey on correctly,with the feathering run your hands over the tyres ,if they have a lip of feather effect at the front of the tread block they are feathered hope that makes sense,i have had a couple of beers! does the noise get louder on one or both sides if you turn side to side at speed say about 80? try that,it will eliminate the chances of it being bearings,if extre noisy on one side,i'd say bearings,hope that helps...

It's your tyres, i hear a loud humming whine sometimes.. depending on the road conditions.

hey guys thanks for the suggestions. As it turns out it was the right hand side rear wheel bearing needed replacing. I had to wait until after Christmas before I could book it in, by then it had become high pitched.

All good now.
