They are basically an AU engine in an EL. They have heaps of differences that can't be seen from the outside.

but are they any better then the standard motor performance wise and what makes them better if so

The main thing they did is change the "Conrod length to stroke length Ratio"
In other words, they made the conrods longer, roughly 0.220" odd, and made the pistons more squat, shorter, and changed the pin to deck heights. Heres some pics.

Yes they are better, but you don't want one.

The rev easier, and are smoother (like an AU). But because they are a mix up of AU and EL parts, getting more performance out of them is difficult. Hybrids have been explained in detail already in this thread and numerous others on FM.

yeah was just wondering as you hear honda hybrids doin all this eco safe stuff was wondering if ford were already onto that ages ago

but from what i can gather its a half au engine in an el aka a dizzy modle au engine with the el rocker cover
