Ok I snapped a head bolt, there is a tiny bit (2mm) sticking out of the block. I tried to drill it out and use a screw extractor but I drilled the hole way off centre, near the side of the bolt and I noticed too late to start again in the middle, so I stopped that and the hole is about 5-8mm deep. I tried using a thin grinding disc to make a slot for a screwdriver, but because of the hole the screwdriver couldn't turn the bolt and one tiny piece broke off of the bolt so the screwdriver way is out the window.
WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS??? I HAVE to have it back on the road by Wednesday. That is a MUST, as it has to go over the pits by then to test the gas system so I can get my $1000 WA grant.

got a welder? weld another bolt to the one stuck in the block? other than that, drill again and use an ezy out.

i dunno about the drilling again, i cant get it straight cos of the first hole. As for welding, I like the idea but I only have an arc welder and basic welding skills. Also what about the splatter

you can stop the welding splater from sticking by using cooking spray. but you need to give it a through clean after. i weld for a living and we use it all the time.i would also make sure any oil/water gallerys are blocked off so as not to get any splatter down them.

could try to file whats left into a bolt to use maybe a 10mm impact socket.

make sure you give it a light tap with a hammer first just to loosen any thing that might be holing it there,it shouldnt be in that hard as the head is off so pressure released

The srew extractor will work with the hole off center maybe even better. Be carefull not to break the extractor though... Continue to drill the hole and try again. As suggested previously, tap the bolt a few times to make sure the thread bond is broken and a bit of WD40 down the hole before you start. Try a bit of heat if all else fails. Good luck but persistance will get it out.

I've had one that was seized into the block, and the old screw driver slot is only good for a bolt that can easily turn, otherwise it's useless.
I had to use the oxy and heat it to get it out, i was ready to give up and it came out on the 3rd go. I was lucky though, i had plenty left on the shaft to use stiltsens, nothing grabs better than those suckers. I think you should drill a bit more and get a good quality extractor, a but of heat wont go astray either. If you damage the thread you can always run a helicoil to repair it. |

all u need is an arc welder....just turn the current up to about 115 120 amps and weld a nut that is bigger then then bolt on it...let it cool then use a shifter or spanner to work it our backwards and forwards....as for spatter...i wouldnt worry too much....not goin to do anythin major...just fill up galleries as said so they dont fill up....

More importantly, cover the bores.
By the way, not sure if you guys noticed his post, but he has 2 mm sticking out of the block, not easy to weld anything to it. |

you can weld a nut onto it, through the centre of the nut, or even a bit of metal rod, anything to give some leverage, also you can try "rostoff" its a penetrating spray, that also has a cooling effect, that stuff is good for getting any tight / rusty bolts off.
