this was done some 20 years ago, but has sat on blocks in a garage for the last 19 years. I want to know if i can put a 250 pre crossflow engine in it without having to obtain an engineering certificate, or am i better off just staying with the 221. The only problem with keeping the 221 is that there is no provision to attach an air conditiong unit to the block like the 250 engine.
any advice would be appreciated. thanks in advance Ray |

There are a few getting around with 289s in them. I don't see the issue with a 250.

from what i know you can increase the motor size by 15% from the original size . anything above that needs to be engineered and that come's with it's own hassle

Should be able to fit a pre-Xflow 250 in it, as long as you upgrade the brakes and the stud pattern ( this will include the Diff.....going from 4 stud to 5 stud).
XP utes had 5 stud. I thought the XP's were the first model to have the 200.....a Super Pursuit.....???? Also, you may need the trans to go with the 250 pre-Xflow too.....bolt pattern may be different.

From memory, XP engine choices were 144, 170 pursuit and 200 super persuit. XR also had 170 and 200ci but 144 was dropped. 221 came out in XT and was used in XW, 250 was XY. I'd stick with the 221 or even go back to 200 super pursuit, I've owned XP and XR 200ci and an XT and XW fairmont 221ci as well as countless XC 250's and an XB 250 ute which is my daily driver, and I'd say that the 221 in the XW was the nicest engine of the lot- admittedly down on torque compared to 250.
