Ok so heres the story, my EF XR6 (Dual Fuel) has decided to start s**t itself. Ive moved to brisbane and with that came my car motorbike, and trailer all fully loaded. Now being the trusty steed she is, 3 days before the trip 5 welsh plugs on the exhaust side started leaking. Ok so i fixed them good and proper with brass ones, flushed the radiator and put some Nulon coolant in her. Well the fun starts on the trip. She was running quite hot, compared to normal so i put it down to heavy load and 35 degree heat outside. For some reason though it didnt seem right for it to run that hot though. ANyway been driving around brisbane and she still runs hot!! then the other Welsh plugs gave way on the intake side and thats when she had a Holden moment, i had to pull over and stop. Got the car home eventually and started dismantling s**t. Long story short 7hours later new welsh plugs in. Start it up and starts to leak from the heater core pipes in the firewall, cracked the s**t and bypassed them. So now im thinking yeah should be good to go. Well yeah it runs a little bit cooler but still too hot and everytime i stp im losing coolant out of my overflow line.
So my options: Burn the car and have a camp fire? Keep chasing my tale with these problems Transplant fresh motor and charge it Atempt to sell it and get Absolutely nothing for it Any suggestions PLEASE! |

Take a deep breath and a step back
Change the overflow/radiator tank cap for a start. If that doesn't help, I would be checking the thermostat and waterpump. Obviously something isn't coping. Why not fix the heater hoses too? How many km's has this thing done? |

leaking head gasket or cracked head....perhaps blocked radiator or stuck thermostat
your cooling system is obviously getting higher than normal pressure

Its done about 255000ks. Head gasket was done 60k ago so im hoping its not though. Thanks for the input guys keep it coming. |

Unfortunately no you have deleted the heater, you cant purge the system properly, hence the loss of coolent from the overflow when turned off. Fix the heater hoses, then get radiator flushed/replaced. Once heater is fixed, allow to run at idle to 1500rpm for 20 mins with heater on max hot and max fan, this will purge the system of any air.
See how that goes and report back Brett

Thought my mum's eb had leaking welsh plugs as well until I went to replace them. Realised it was a leaking head gasket with coolant running down too the welsh plugs and then down the block. Hard to see with the exhaust manifold obscuring my view. Ended up changing the head gasket and welsh plugs. Sounds like your system is suffering from over pressure possibly caused by a bad gasket/head. This would explain heater core and welsh plug letting go. This would also possibly explain overheating.

Yeah fair call on the heater core, man thats going to be an absolute b**ch of a job to replace. If it is a head gasket , well im unlucky because its already been done. Yeah i checked all the plugs and its not leaking out of the head gaskit, and ive got no power loss. I dont know its starting to do my head in, but the car ran ok today, but it wasnt that hot and it was raining, but no leak so its a promosing sign. I think radiator out and flushed, Cap and bottle replaced and heater core replaced, im going to have a painful weekend ahead of me! Any tips on the heater core remval and replacement?

I would look more towards the water pump first. before getting into the heater, simply cause its on the front and relativly easy to access.

God help me if i have to take that f**k intake manifold out again. the more i think about it the more im starting to think its the head or the thermostat. |

you do not need the heater core in place at all
i had mine bypassed for 2 years without any problems
