I've done some searching to which no luck on the FM's

I inspected a EF Fairmont today to purchase and Damn was this one nice car for the price.

Everything on the car was imaculate and even the books matched!
However, I wasn't too convinced the engine was at its optimum,
I could see evidence of coolant along the sump gasket, welsch plugs were corroded, oil gallery side of the head was wet, then I stopped looking

Now for the interesting part,

Along the radiator we have the usual return lines for the coolant recovery tank, now this car had another line going to a brass pipe directly into cyl No.6 in the exhaust casting on the head!?WTF??

I could understand the concept if this was to 'tap' into the water gallery in a theory would probably work to an extent, BUT most of us i6 fans know the real reason these gaskets go.. and I didn't buy this Idea.

Im curious to see if anyone here has seen / expirienced this such preventive measure,

And please shed some light if you can!

ps. this did look like quite a prefessional and thought out job

The other thing that I wasn't sure about was.. Im pretty sure 'fairmont' is labled on the compliance plate in this range.. not 'FALCON' correct me if I'm wrong as I haven't a fairmont to check this!

I have seen it done. The I6 is at its hottest on cyls 5 and 6.

It is a theory promoted by All Head Services in Braeside. All their Ford I6 heads leave there with that pipe in place. From what I was told its to prevent air pockets sitting in the back of the head.

The small hoses from the radiator and thermostat housing are also only there to let air return to the header tank.


My Fairmont also has Falcon on the compliance plate, I believe that is the way it is meant to be.

think only the ELs were fairmont on the plate?

No my EL Fairmont has Falcon on the plate, and its definately a mont.

Yup, thats what that pipe is for, Its to stop air and cracks in the back of the head, because the water galleries in 5-6 get the hottest (as above) I've seen many falcons with that brass pipe, and then going back to the surge tank with a T peice ... 'd say that car has done a head before ...

I do that with some of my heads,depending if the customer wants it done, never had a head come back!!!

thats why the AU headgasket is different it has 2 water jackets blocked off at the front to promote more coolant into the back of the engine ( the hottest part)
