changing the cam timing will throw your tune out wont it. shouldnt you get the cam right first, then tune it? possibly aim for 5200-5500rpm peak

The tuner said they could play with cam timing during the final tuning.

It will, but it should also move linear, so adjusting the tune for it would mean just moving the curve accordingly.

The top end of the tune is sorted, but the from idle to 4,000 needs working on, once I have the tune good through the range, then I will look at where the cam is coming on and adjust.

At the moment there are too many variables that need fixing eg: changing the linkage system (heatsoak has thrown the balance out a couple of times, when it sits still idling too long).

I have cut out the alloy bits i need to sort the linkages, tomorrow I will drill and tap them, get that working well, then can fix the tune down low. Also need to hook the thermos up to the EMS, and put in a new temp sensor and calibrate. Once all that is done, I can start looking at fuel override using vacuum for idle and cruise loads.

The cold start settings also need to be worked out, as currently it is overfueling on cold (hence the new temp sensor that will be calibrated with boiling water).

Re did the linkages today, whilst I had the throttle bodies off, I found a bent butterfly on number 3, have no idea how it got bent???? But we are talking like a 5degree bend at the centre shaft, no wonder I couldn't get it to behave like I wanted. Took it apart and flattened it, fitted the new linkages and took it for a drive.  Completely different car... It has so much more bottom end and mid range than before (amazing the difference having one TB out of whack makes), this is how I thought it would be like, made under 4,000rpm so much smoother too. Only problem now is it wants to idle at 1700 and that is with all TB's tightly closed and air bleeds done up. So will redo the bottom of the fuel map tomorrow, and see if I can get it to idle nicely.

Some pictures of the new linkages:

Roughly cutout on the bandsaw

Little bit of filing, some drilling and tapping and we have new linkages

This allows each pair of TB's to be free, previously they were locked together

All mounted up

Can't wait to get the tune sorted with the new found bottom end power :D

Now also have an exhaust leak, somewhere around where the muffler joins the tailpipe, will need to get under it tomorrow and sort that out as well.

If you have all air-bleeds shut, and the butterflys shut, and it idles at 1700rpm......Vacuum leak???

That's possible, will check all hoses tomorrow first, but it's still making good vacuum, and brakes still feel the same.

I'm starting to think it is just forcing air past the butterflies, as I just had a look and the butterflies snap shut much more when the engine is not running, so perhaps the air bleed screw were not out enough and the air is bleeding past the butterflies.

Lots of things to check.

also look at the timing at idle, a few deg taken out at idle can drop your idle speed..

Sorted :D :D

Found a vacuum line coming from inside hidden by some wiring, re-set the linkages and retightened the manifold and TB's once it was warm as last time the TB's were taken off they only settled once they had heated up.

Now she idles perfectly :D and returns to idle instantly off throttle, throttle response has picked up by about 200% :D , that would be mainly due to the bent butterfly, now with no vacuum leaks and balanced TB's it bloody flies :o

Going to try and film a 0-100 run this arvo, have to find the GPS to check where 100 is on the speedo, as when it was on the dyno the tuner mentioned that the speedo was ready 10kmph too high at 100kmph. I have been allowing 5kmph for normal driving, eg: sitting at 55 in a 60 zone, and have been through a number of speed cameras fine.

Have to get it back on the dyno now the problems are sorted, it has picked up what feels like 50% more go from idle to 4,000, hard to tell in the top end, but it would be something, not as much being full throttle, but a bent butterfly would still restrict flow to one TB. But the difference low-mid is like night/day.

Cheers, but I found mine, the speedo sits just about on 90kmph when the GPS reads 100kmph, at 60 on the GPS the speedo is at just under 55.

Video of how it now idles without vacuum leaks or bent butterfly. The whistle that can be heard is coming from the TB that had the bent butterfly, so even though it now seals there must ba a tiny bit getting through, will get a new butterfly sent over.

Tried twice, foiled both times... First time user error, the camera fell off it's mount, and footage befroe that shows my shoulder

Second time, re-mounted the camera more solidly, but ran into the local copper twice out patrolling with a speed camera, first he was on the good 100kmph zone road, so went to the deli got a coffee and waited, headed off into another 100 zone, pulled over to get camera rolling, and he cruises past, so gave up for the day.

Good news dude! always gonna have a few little teething problems, sorting them out is satisfying in the end, although annoying at the time, well done!

Wow dude! I have not read up on this project for a few pages now, but i noticed in the "show us ya e-series" thread that it was running, so popped back here. Great work! Great craftsmanship!

Cheers
