Picked up a pod on the way home, so I can drive it whilst making the new plenum MKII.

Image

Thought I would do a comparison log from the EMS, since I did one just before with the ram tubes, pretty big difference, in air flow. It pulls twice as hard through low/mid, and feels stronger up top.

The only difference between the two logs is first one with open ram tubes, second one plenum and pod filter.

Before log, AFR pretty much steady at 12.4 at near and full throttle
Image

With the plenum about AFR 14, and that's only at 80% throttle, I saw it head up on the laptop so didn't squeeze that extra bit, you can also see in first gear, I had to feed the throttle in as it wanted to spin, and once it got near full throttle at about 4,000rpm it started to spin again so that's why on and off the throttle in first gear.
Image

Can't wait to tune the thing, if it's sucking that much more air, then there has to be a few more KW's in it.

Started on the new MkII plenum today, I am going to fold up the main body section out of one sheet, for more strength and less welds.

As this will be the "good" one, I am polishing everything before welding.

Like you said, there has to be power there if it's gone that lean.

I did an overlay, of the two runs, it's quite amazing, the black line is the log with the ram tubes, see how much quicker it accelerates, if i didn't have to get off it in first, you can see the angle of the rev curve, second gear really shows the difference, thats nearly 1/4 quicker with the plenum, and the quicker run was at 80% throttle in second and on and off in first, and with AFR's at 14

No changes at all to the car or tune except the plenum and pod. same day time temp, same engine temp

Dude your doing some amazing work! Get a patent on your specific dimensions ASAP then sell it to ford :-)

Would be awesome if you also had an overlay of an e-series log manifold and BBM to compare as well.

No point selling it to ford, but maybe sell or license it to a hi performance workshop that makes things like this, or make a few & sell them yourself?

Cheers

I reckon dsyfer should supply the ITB and his fabricated plenum as a diy N/A kit and sell it here for a price. if it's leaning a bit now compared to the original AFR then it's sucking in more air then it ever did with the open ITB setup.

I reckon if the mark ll version has a bigger plenum volume, it's likely it'll have less response as the one above. who knows, only way to find out if he does a back to back comparison run with the data logger.

Once mkII is done, I'm hoping the alloy bends get here by Tue (the chrome intercooler stuff is crap alloy) I will try and get on the same dyno, where the ram tubes got 167rwkw, the only difference will be the plenum. The torque curves would be miles apart, if you can get traction in first it starts spinning again once it hits 4,500rpm. There is a huge difference in drivability, it's smoother and nicer to drive in traffic (did 100kms today, hills, city) than it was as a stocker. For a cam that makes it peak power at 6,000rpm I can happily cruise at 1,100rpm in 3rd and squeeze the throttle, no arguments, no coughs, just accelerates.
I can't wait to put a turbo on this now, it's going to be ridiculous, I have started the T56 fund already.

I

I know you have put a lot of work in to this but is there ANY possibility of you putting this into a kit for production like slick said?

If I can make one suggestion, do not polish all your ally plenum parts before welding... the polish embedded into the surface when polishing, makes for a god awful welding experience, you will be forever stopping to brass wire brush ahead of the weld seam, plus trying to clean the weld bead you have just been doing.. other than that, looks good.

Cheers for that, all the areas that will be welded will get sanded before welding, it's just easier to do the most of the runners before.

Got mkII ready for welding tomorrow, I need to get some more rods in the morning.

How long you expect welding to take?? id guess there would be 4hrs worth of welding there.. have you been practicing to make your weld beads look sweet? Id practice as much as you can before going for it, its one of them things that will look killer if you get the welding right

I was thinking about 6hrs, I will be taking my time to try and get it spot on. I am thinking of smoothing the round joins, as I can weld them both sides, then make a feature of the straight welds, see how it goes.

MkII coming along nicely

Image

Only the runners left to do, but the manifold needs to come off for that to keep the runners in place whilst welding, and I need the car tomorrow, so will have to wait.
Image

Image

This one makes me think of the Titanic :D
Image

The runners have an angle, on their edge, they will sit in the base plate and be flush on the inside
Image

This will be achieved by using one of these, I haven't turned up the bit yet, so disregard the current shape
Image

to continue..
