The idea of a "V" formation is room
ie a v6 is shorter But wider than an i6 same deal witha V8 there are old i8 engines around from pre ww2 also with anythign longer than 8cyls inline u may get crank balance problems and im sure there are others as well i may be wrong here but a i6 and a v6 with same capicty and basic design ( ie doch ) and cam profiles should produce simalar power and torque figures

i6 is more naturally balanced.

okay.. to be more specific why is or why isnt the OHCI6 4.0 LTR that is in most 6 cyl fords better than the V6 in the holdens

i think because the i6 isn't in a radial formation (v) it doesnt produce the revs of a v6 either. you'll find an ef has more power and torque then a vr or vs anyway i think

What do you mean by 'better'?
The ford 6 is a long stroke inline engine. Its got lots of torque and is smooth but is big and heavy and doesnt like to rev. The holden v6 is physically smaller because of the V configuration but it makes the engine rougher. It has a shorter stroke, less torque and power but will rev a little more. Biggest problem with the AU engine is they stuck it in the ugliest car ever made

In the last 10-15 years manufacturers such as VW and Landrover as well as Jeep and even Hummer have all developed a Inline 5. Its all due to balance. If it was the best design out there so many more vehicle companies would still be putting i6's in cars. The inline 6 is a good thing but like Frank said its all about packaging. Hell even a few Oldsmobiles had straight 8's! Lycoming still do a straight 8 for planes. As well as w16's and starfires, they make a variety of motors to suit the plane as far as weight , space and output goes RELIABLY! In most cases you can achieve a desirable torque and horsepower range in a package that would fit in the engine bay given enough development. If you are comparing a vt ecotec motor with a ford i6 then the ford has it with the torque figure ( extra capacity I'd say). But i wouldnt say its the rule of thumb either.

I6 (and multiples of I6) have the best natural balance of all I and V configurations.
The fords I6 torque comes from the long stroke. It gives the pistons a big lever to push down on to turn the crank which increases the turning power of the engine.

Try this one:
http://www.fordmods.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=40255 I compiled it a while ago (I will need to update it soon). Was a bit disappointed that it wasn't made into a sticky But to compare, why not swap cars for a day? That way, he can see what is great about the I6 and you can try and find something (anything!?) good about the V6. |

i have heard the power curve of the I6 is better then the V6, another words at 180kph the V6 will start to stop making power, where as the I6 will continue to make power till the motor gives out

so basicly my argument against his is that the I6 in my car is better than his V6 because it is Straight making it more balanced and the strokes are longer which gives it more torque hense being faster...

You're argument is that your car makes more power and more torque, runs smoother and 'should' beat him down the quarter or in an open drag where you can go to 80km p/h or more.
The EF / EL Falcons can be fairly even with the VN / VP commadores, but the VP is the best one they have managed to produce. For reference, it took a VP owning friend of mine a 2.5in Catback and some manifold work to beat my stock EF to 80km/h. But I still whoop him out to 110km/h. The VT with a V6 ecotech wont be anywhere near as quick as a VP Bewick, so you should have the advantage.
