Hi Guy's,

I think it's time to modify my cold air intake (after being hasstled by Fuzion  ). I am looking at all idea's such as:

a. Podd's and Pannel's,
b. Mandrel bent pipe's,
c. Flexi hose,
d. Cutting into wheel arch's,
e. Removing drive light's for flexi hose application's,
f. Making it a primary intake, or a suplimentary intake etc...

Although she's an XR, she doesn't have the XR front end anymore. It would be more like trying to modify the intake for a TS50 (I have the C2R font end). So there ain't much room to fiddle without cutting through wheel arch's. You can see from the picture below.

I have searched the technical documents in this forum and other's, but none seem to fit this type of application. Perhaps a new docco can be written :)

At the moment she has the Tickford snorkle and BA intake pipe with K&N filter, so she has been opened up somewhat, but I want more. I have a rough idea of what I need/want to do, but I will throw it up for you guy's to have a look at and sus it out from all angle's and opinion's.

If anyone has tackled this before, for this kind of setup, your comment's, experience, and any photograph's will help greatly.

Thank's

Shugg

I guess i have a CAI of sorts... the blower obviously gets in the way of any airbox etc. The intake is on the rear of the unit as well - so only way to go was down.

Basically a big hole cut in the inner guard with some 4inch flexi tube running down there. The pod filter is mounted on an l shaped bracket to the rad/bumper support part of the car. I dont imagine an AU would be too different to setup.

Pics in my gallery, you can see where the hole is (doesnt interfere with ABS module as its the hole is quite far forward) and also how the filter is mounted.

Well firstly , nice car dude.

and second i wouldn't recomend getting a second intake pipe at all. I cut one into my air box and ran some tubing down beside the radiator and it sat just behind the mesh in my front skirt. I didn't notice any improvement at all, in fact i think it lost power to be honest. But on the other hand i think it might suit your setup as my car hasn't had much work done to it. I think my car was getting too much air.

Any way it didn't cost me much to try out, so if you try it out and don't get any improvements well you could always take it off and bung up the hole like i did.

You only need an intake as big as the throttle body.

I would still want to keep it a little bigger though, I mean if your going to spend the money increasing the size of the intake you would want to make sure it wasn't the bottleneck at any stage. Let the T/B be the bottleneck.

anyone ELSE run a pipe from behind the front spoiler? good or bad? since fitting a ghia bonnet and custom bar ive lost power (less airflow near the filter intake) so i was bout to run a pipe to the bottom mesh but now I'm not so sure. either that or run the pipe to a bonnet vent/snorkel ?

I have cut the bottom of my airbox and inserted flexible pipe down to the left corner light. Didnty notice much difference, but the induction roar from 3 to 5 grand is awesome. On the dyno there was little difference, but was worth.1 on the strip

One thing you should be aware of is not to go through flooded roadways as the water will get sucked straight into the engine. Then you're screwed.
