Ive only just purchased a 1995 ef falcon gli with tickford gas.
I traded my eb series 2 for this car.
Well this is the story and what i did to correct the problems that the ef was doing.
It would start nice when cold and hold idle rpm properly, whether it was in park or drive position the idle speed was spot on.
However when the engine reached operating temp it was doing the following.
The idle rpm at park and neutral position was around 750rpm and when drive was selected it would drop by at least 150rpm, it would also cause the engine to run rough.
Another annoying thing was the fact that the idle speed would hang and slowly drop. After investigating it i determined that the hang up was normal as these engines are lean burn engines and the idle hang up was supposed to be programmed into the pcm so as to produce less pollutents.

I thought that this was unnacaptable , and the reason for this was the fact that my eb always idled like a swiss watch.

The first thing i did was check the ht leads for leakage . The best way to do this is at night with all lights off and watching the leads as it idles, well bingo i had a christmas tree effect from all the leads.

changed all the leads and the car ran good at all speeds except idle.
Next thing in order was the idle speed control vavle.
It was clean but i cleaned it again and the plunger was moving freely.
However what i did notice is that the valve was normally open by default,
Odd i thought because a normally open vavle would be over active as the valve eventually wears and causes all sorts of hunting and delays at setting idle speeds.

I junked the valve and i put a isc motor of an eb on it.
The isc on the eb is normally closed by default and it would work better.
Its amazing what difference this valve made.
Idle speed control is now more then acceptable and the hang up whilst slowing down has reduced from 1100 rpm to 850 rpm.

The next thing i had to fix was the intermittent miss at idle only.
I now discovered that this engine has a coil pack system,
To be honest i can see the reason for this set up . good timing and spark control.
I was not familiar with this set up and consulted a ford workshop manual.
Coil pack is driven by the ecu and the basic pulses are derived from the cam angle sensor and crank angle sensor.

I performed a Pcm diagnostic check and it threw back the code saying that the cam angle sensor was out of range.
So prior to removing it from the engine where the distributor usually sits
I first checked the earthing points and found that they where good.
I removed the cam angle sensor and cleaned it thoroughly , pulled it apart as much as i could and made sure it work freely.
After reinstalling it i first checked that the engine would start and then disconnected the battery neg for half an hour.
The battery was reconnected and the correct learning procedure for the pcm was performed.

All this FIXT IT , i actually was suprised as normally when an electrical item plays up , it usually requires replacement.

My car now works perfectly and am finally happy with it.
