You could try and reset the ECU, disconnect the battery for 30 mins....If you dont have a manual for your car then buy one, it should have a procedure for this in it as well.
I reckon it could be the ISC (idle speed controller). When the car warms up it will free up, when cold it will stay partially shut. I have got rid of mine altogether as i had issues with the revs takin ages to go back after revving. Just adjust the screw up on the side of the throttle body. Cheers Daz

I had a very similar problem with my EF too. When i start the car in the morning the car would fire but then die almost straight away. Sometimes i could keep trying to start the car 4-5 times and it still would fire but then die unless i gave it some gas just to keep the revs up, but even then the idle would hunt for a few minutes like it had a massive cam in it . Once the car is warm though, it seems you can turn the car off and start it up again no problem. I pulled out the Idle speed controller and cleaned it out, now it fires first time everytime ever since.
Try pulling the ISC off and cleaning it out with some carby cleaner and see how that goes |

I found leaving it off gives a 100% better result haha
