The last couple of days I've started the car and had no accessories (only in the on position, everything is fine in the acc position). They would "magically" come on later after driving for a while. When I say no accessories, I mean radio, p/windows, windscreen wipers, p/mirrors.. well you get the idea.
I descovered it seems to be the ignition switch or the ignition barrel. If I wiggle the key back and forth whilst the car is on it will turn everything on. It's getting worse and worse however so I'm worried it's about to give up completley.
My question is, what do you think it is? I have never seen inside where the ignition barrel sits so I don't know if it's one big unit or if ther is a barrel and a switch? Has anyone had this before? Please give me some ideas. Sorry if this has been covered before but I couldn't use the search... btw any ideas when the search will be back up?
Cheers
-Warren

Same thing happened on my EF Gli. It got to the point where i pulled my key out and the car was still running. I pulled off the cover that goes around the ignition barrel (4 screws from memory) and i noticed that the back of the assembly simply popped off. The end i am refering to is where all the wires are, its circular and it slides into a larger circle...if that makes sense. Its held in by crimping the outside circle onto the inner. This pops out along with a copper plate and a spring. These are an absolute b**ch to line back up so dont let it pop off!!!

I managed to get mine lined back up and got some tape to kep it in. Mine isnt lined up properly and it starts on the second click. So i really have to fix mine. I hope this helps man?

BTW you can just go and get a new one from the wreckers and just swap your barrels over. It will have some headless screws, so all you have to do is chisel a groove and then just unscrew them.

that kind of makes sense to me (without seeing what it looks like yet), I think I'll have to crack open the steering column and see what's going on in there. So what you're saying is it's likley to be the switch not the barrel? Is there anything in the barrel that may cause it to do that? Maybe a piece of plastic that's worn down?

Most proably not. It will be more than likely a dodgee connection.

Think of it this way. Key goes into right hand side, then on the left hand side is a round plate connector with all the wires going into it. This is what will most likely be the cause. You turn the key, which in turn moves a bar with a copper plate and creates a connection with specific wires. I would almost put money on it being the issue.

Try an get to it as soon as possible cause if it pops off your screwed!!!!

Another way of thinking about is think of a plug in your sink. It goes into a bigger hole. Get it??? The "plug" is what you problem is. You will most likely have to get a set of vice grips of BIG pliers and crimp the "hole" tight onto the "plug".

BTW this is realy hard to explain without pics!!!

Give us a yell if you have any more issues
