OK.
This has got me a bit confused. I want to get the ignition timing right on my AU motor'ed EB. The way I had it the ignition timing seemed a tad retarded (would run on standard 91RON, and the car feels a bit sluggish). The problem is, the dizzy was maxxed out against the block allowing no further adjustment. So I pulled it out and rotated the whole lot clockwise in the hope that I could have the dizzy sitting closer to the air-con side, and that would allow me adjustment for advancing the timing. I'm pretty sure I only adjusted it by one tooth. Unfortunately the bloody thing won't start like that, it'll start and run fine when I put it back how I had it though. Also the TDC mark on AU's seems to be offset to the right a bit. Should standard ignnition timing show up pretty much vertical on the harmonic balancer (when pointing a timing light at it). Where should the rotor be in relation to the START and FINISH marks on the dizzy, when the motor is exactly on TDC? If I can get an answer to that, I should be set. Cheers, Dave. |

i'm sure its finish tdc. as the standard timing is 10deg tdc. so that would be start. Just seems logical to me.
U can time it either way. Start 10 deg TDC Finish 0 deg TDC Muff |

If you're TFI is pointing towards the front if your engine bay, you should be pushing it towards the inlet manifold to advance it... Sounds like you were retarding?
When number 1 is at TDC, your engine should have fired 10 degress before that.. (on stock timing)... thats 10 degrees advanced. So find the start mark (should be under number 1 on the dizzy cap from memory, and put it 10 degrees before that line when the engine is on TDC. If you have any more dramas, gimme a call on +614, I can try and walk you through it. Nothing worse than the engine not starting after you tried to do something as simple as timing. Cheers

Thanks guys,
TFI is pointing backwards, because the Air-con is in the way. OK, the way I had it before the maximum advance I could get was with TDC and the rotor on Finish. I've been rotating it counter-clockwise, but it runs out of adjustment at about the stock 10 degrees of advance. Which is the whole reason I've been fiddling trying to get more advance out of it. Say if I wanted it set to about 20 degrees advance, does anyone knwo where the rotor should be roughly with motor on TDC? Cheers, Dave. |

20 degrees advance is also referred to 20 BTDC, before top dead centre.
So the rotor arm should literally by 20 degrees before number 1 on the distributor when the motor is sitting at TDC. Cheers

Well that's what I thought, but I must have grossly miscalculated 20 degrees lol.
I think at the moment I may have it at about 40 degrees BTDC lol. They're a bastard to get right! |

Ok, just reset it.
Got it right this time I think. Got the mark on the balancer roughly where I had it before, only this time the dizzy is sitting back near the air-con, leaving room for adjustment! It's good where it is now, but if I advance it even more it gets a very rough idle, and if I take it all the way to the end of adjustment it stalls. While we're on the topic of idle, this is something my car has been doing for a while: Idles quite nicely up near 900rpm (and will sit there happily all day), very smooth. Only problem is after revving the engine it will hang at 1300rpm for a while. Bloody thing giving me the s**t. If I adjust the idle down to about 800rpm it will stay smooth for a few seconds before chucking a tanty and hunting up and down voilentely, then stalling. I think I need to reset the ECU I don't get it, because it *seems* to want to idle nice, it's not rough or anything, but it just hunts like buggery if it's too low. I think I need a Dimasquirt! Standard timing + cam = yuk.
Seems to make quite a noticable difference with another 10 or so degrees of advance. |

if u pull the rotor off and the plastic cover underneath u'll see a notch on the outer rim of the distributor. put the rotor back on and it will point to this notch at no.1 tdc.
every bosch distributor has the no.1 notch

If it starts revving down as you move the distributor, thats retarding the timing. If you have it too far advanced for it to start, it'll kick back on itself.. Like it tries to fire, but all of a sudden turns the other way sort of thing.
These engines you can plretty much normally throw anything at them for idle, and they should take it... And Ive noticed from tuning that these cams like the advance, they just eat it up and keep revving. If you're advancing accross the whole board, I wouldn't go too far though, but Im pretty sure you know that And whenever you're ready for a dimasquirt, let me know.. having a manual EB, its quite simple. Dima, I'd really like you to see what it's doing first hand. I'm going to make a trip down to Sydney in a few weeks, whenever Jase has some time.
It's definately being advanced. It does the same thing both ways. If I retard it the idle gets really rough and lowers, and if I advance it way to far the same thing happens. Doesn't matter though cos I'm not planning on running that much advance. I just thought it was weird cos it's never happened on any other car I've played with before. It's mainly just the hunting idle that s**t's me now, and yeah I know all about cleaning the ISC etc. I'm sick of having the car idle at like 900-1100rpm with the occasional hang around 1300rpm. I'm going to drive the thing off a cliff!!!!! |

lol.. in all my owning of the car, I don't think I ever plugged that wretched thing back in... And now I just don't have one lol.
Id unplug it, and then adjust the idle from there with the butterfly. People say it stalls, but mine was always fine.. As for advancing, Have you been putting it in diagnostic mode before advancing? That locks in static timing, so you can adjust the mechanical advance from there, it keeps it at the same spot too, so it doesn't jump around so much. Cheers
