Its a long story but: I need to reset the ignition timing on my 1998 XR6 - South African version, if different.

I cannot get the procedure for adjusting the timing. The book states that timing should be set to TDC but when I do that, things are not the way it should be (rough etc). So I pressume that there are special procedure/tools etc to set the timing.

Can anybody help please?

Not sure about the South African version. But there is a white connector next to the fuse panel on the driverside of the car. You need to bridge the top and bottom pins on the left side of the connector and then start the engine and set the base timing.

You have to short the 2 pins that NC Steve has said, and start the car.

But in an EL you have to wait for the computer to drop itself into base timing mode. This is usually 2 mins after you start the car. You will notice it as the engine almost stalls then will pick itself up and run a little rough.

At this stage you reset the base timing. Which is 0 degrees. Theres only one mark on the balancer and timing cover, so you just need to line them up.

But make sure the engine is in base timing mode before you do anything or you will through the timing out badly.

also a drop of white out on the harmonic balancer & the timing case marks help a lot when using a timing light hehe .
