Hey there guys got a real doozie of a problem, so here the story goes...
Been away for 6 months so car has been sitting round not really doing much but my flatmate has taken out atleast once a week for a good drive just to keep it ticking over, hes a mechanic so took good care of it. I get home to use my car and im driving along everything is running fine, cruising at 100 and engine cuts out without warning and all lights on the dash come up as if I had stalled. Have to pull over and start the car again and runs fine for the rest of my journey (about 140km) Next day running a few eronds and it starts to "choke" as if its about to run out of gas (has a full tank in it) then runs really low on power and eventually cuts out again. Tried restarting it and takes a good minute of cranking before it even thinks about restarting and then runs like a bag of s**t, really low on power and threatening to cut out again, sounds like its running on 5 cylinders cos its really loud. I nurse it home in which time it cuts out twice more...frustrates the s**t out of me so in the garage it goes. Have checked for loose relays, plugs etc checked for air leaks but cant "seem" to find any. Can anybody please help as im running our of patience. Its a EF XR6 by the way. Sorry for the long story its best I could explain it. Cheers for your help in advance.

Sorry also forgot to add I thought it may have been the J3 chip was causing some problems so took it out but still no change in problems.

In between sh*tting itself it doesnt seem to be running rich at all....however when it was running like s**t there was a bit of smoke coming out the exhaust and did smell a little rich but im pretty damn sure its cos one of the cylinders wasnt firing so unburnt fuel smell maybe???

A sticking injector flooding it?

I did think of something to do with injectors so put some injector cleaner through it...but still nothing. Dont know if this would help a sticking injector though??

Check the coil pack and make sure you get good spark. Coil might have died on you hence the intermittent engine failure.

Please excuse my ignorance but TFI?? There was a slight miss that I have had for a while and coil pack is last thing I have to replace before i am out of ideas on that problem. Do you guys think it may have completely s**t itself now?? If it has though would it just NOT run at all all the time

If they haven't been replaced before, might be a good time to get new ones. I don't remember what TFI stands for, but it sits on the side of a distributor which tends to die causing ignition issues. I'm pretty sure coilpacks don't have this...but I might be wrong. But I'm just taking pod shots of things that may cause engine cut outs. I would point my finger at the fuel filter as well, but since you said the whole car just shut off and then restarted while driving, I would say ignition is the problem. Also...McFused sounds better then McConfused, too many syllables. That's why McBash sounds better than McBeating.

Yeah Leads are brand new so I know its not those, Spark plugs are also new (replaced those trying to diagnose the miss) I have a new coilpack sitting there just havent got round to replacing it as I had to go away for work. Its a bit of a a*** job so its going to the mechanics to get replaced tomorrow or the next day. Anything else you recommend checking or replacing? As for McFused...sounds alright...I would of really wanted to put McFu*ked but didnt want to get into trouble with the moderators haha

A TFI fails graduly, stopping the engines ignition system from functioning properly, causes backfires s**t timing but i just checked mostly stalling!! if it was an EA EB ED EL it would have one EF+AU onwards is coil pack so guess its not that.
