was looking at the cast intake manifold off an el, it looked like there was a fair amount of excess steel sitting in the chamber (a main cross member plus a couple of other areas), im not sure if its there to maintain some sort of air flow or not, but if the manifold was to be cut and most of this steel removed from inside it, leaving one big hollow chamber, this would increase the capacity for air within it, would this be worthwhile or not? anyone tried it?

why not just put a box plenum on top like others have?
much less stuffing around |

That 'excess steel' is to create the dual runner lengths the BBM has.
It switches from long runners (for good low down torque) to short runners (for top end power).

the only time i've seen the plenum idea done was with a forced induction.. ie pyroay has had a plenum top half made up and rmyers has taken out the BBM butterflies and opened up the chamber completely but again this isnt NA..

What Rymers has done, didn't Ford do the similar thing on the XR6T's? A BBM with no butterflies.

svo_xr6 also removed the top of the plenum and put on twin throttle bodies?

you might be hard pressed finding steel in the cast aluminium manifold.. unless your going to decrease the size of the steel in the butterflies.... or the gasket...
