Is there a way to tell if your vehicle has independant rear suspension by looking at it?

just look under it and if you cant really get under there to see it , stand back abit and look and if the tail pipe sits really low near the diff thats a dead give away and also if its lowered it has a slight bit of camber at the wheels

Doesn't a live rear end have the springs on the diff, while in IRS they are not?

Simply though, if you've got a 99 AU Forte, you don't have IRS.

not sure if this is a serious thread but here goes...
look under your car - look closely at the back axle - a non independant rear end kinda looks, well, solid from wheel to wheel...it looks like a tube or pipe from one wheel to the other with a bulge in the middle where the tailshaft goes in (the `bulge ' bit is where the differential gears are...) an independant rear has the same sorta bulge in the middle only it doesent look like a solid tube from the middle to the wheel - there may be u joints or rubber flexy looking joints between the bulge bit and a sorta tailshaft looking shaft going out to each rear wheel along with control arms ... It might help for you to just say what kinda car you have and we can say whether it has an independant rear or not - generally older falcons don't, the older you have, the less likely it has one...

there you go, a picture definately is worth a 1000 words - I should have found a pik rather than my explanation...those piks, are of course, an independent rear end...

now that you've said that, i really really need pics of the boxcar lol i have a few similar projects on the burner but none of them involve fords, more performance orientated. as much as i love fords, for cut n shut value they're pretty limited compared to riceburners.
the only advantage of the irs is traction, it has no effect on handling other than more roll capability.

Simply increased (lateral) traction. And the increased roll is handled the same as you would on a live axle rear end, stiffer springs, bigger sway bar. IRS can in poor *cough* commodore *cough* implementations reduce acceleration traction if the wheels suffer massive dynamic negative camber gain.
