I just had a look inside my TB and its covered in oily tar and it seems to get worse the further in ya go! this cant be good im sure. But apart from some lpg backfires I cant think what could have caused it (if that even)
Ive heard oil based air filters can suck oil into your intake but that doesnt explain why the plastic intake piping is clean.

It would be engine oil vapour. possibly blow-by from your PCV system.

ya is right.. I just looked at where the breather hose joins (further back on the plastic on mine for lpg) .. same s**t localised all around it.

yeah it has...
My TB was coated in oil the other week when i over filled my engine with oil, i'd say it could be splashing up into the intake or something. I cleaned the intake out yesterday after an oil change i'll let you know if its covered again this arvo |

there is a swear filter. It can be turned on/off in your profile.

Completely normal. Some oil from the PCV/oil breather pipes, some coming back from the inlet valves. |

So what kinda impact does the PCV system have on combustion?
I cant imagine all the oily vapor helping things very much.

My logic is that because oil isnt as volatile as petrol it would have a slower burn rate and actually act like an octane booster, but on the other side it could also compression ignite because it wont completely mix with the fuel on the way in. Surely Ford would have worked this out when they designed the system, and although its sole purpose is to eliminate the release of hydrocarbons due to blow by, it would have to have other positive results such as valve lubrication

Apparently oil vapour will lead to detonation, which is why people insist on breaking emissions law and venting the oil vapour into the atmosphere.
I was told my tired EF block (250,000km+ with 10:1 compression) was pinging due to the high amounts of oil vapour from the worn rings. Since the new engine has gone in, with an even higher compression ratio (11.7:1) there havent been any detonation issues - so it would appear that the theory is right.

Some highly boosted turbo cars suffer from lots of oil vapour 'blow by' and so many install oil 'catch cans' in the hose going back into the inlet manifold. In these instances it is said that the 'blow by' definitely caused detonation (yeh, but what about the 25 pounds boost!). I tried this on my old turbo car and caught stuff all oil over 1,000 kms, so I took it off. |

if you have a mixer type LPG system which most are, the grease is probably from the LPG. It's harmless although over time can collect and cause probs with electronic throttles.

I do so that explains it Tell me about your injected lpg system!! Cost/performance/where the hell u got it :)

It's just like an EFI system except LPG is injected. The neat thing is that when the LPG is injected, it vapourises and gives a bit of intercooling.
Cost, no idea Performance is the same as petrol We develop LPG systems in my company so that's how I got it It's all prototype stuff we are playing around with at the moment but I have done 50000 with it on my BA and it's still going strong. I'm hoping to get along to a cruise one day so folks can have a look. ps no grease collecting on the throttle either
