well im about to install a cam in my xr6 (rpd r6), changing the cam is pretty straight forward, but the springs....
if i leave the old cam in, take the rocker gear off, then pressurise the cylinders, when i do each cylinder seperately, it will move down to bdc (bottom dead centre), then i can do the springs and it wont f**k around with the timing at all. does this sound like a good way to go about it? i hope all that made sence im a little hungover i donnt really want to take the head off if its not needed

Sounds like a plan. Use Moly grease on the cam journals. How good are the valve stem seals???

havent had a look yet mate, i spose i will when im ready for the install, hopefully compression is good, otherwise afew valves will be falling out, probly pressurise each cylinder, wait 30 minutes, to see if its lost any pressure, i had the rocker cover off, and it all seems in very good condition, now all i need is the special tool to compress the valve springs when removing and installing them

turn each cylinder to tdc on compression. put it in gear and pull the handbrake on. that way if the valve does drop it will only drop as far as the piston.

it doesnt have to be on compression right? could be on compression or exhaust stroke, coz the rocker gear will be removed

put the car in gear with the handbrake on, and do it cylinder by cylinder without turning the motor. If the motor turns theres a fairly good chance the chain will move a tooth or two on the crank / idler shaft which will mean the timing cover has to come off to sort it out.
Put it in 4th or 5th with the handbrake on, and leave it there. |

ye but it wont matter if it turns over right? coz the cam will still be inplace, only the rocker gear will be removed, but im still leaning towards doing it that way anyway, seems easier and involving less risk.

ah yeah, i missed the bit where you said you would leave the old cam in.. just need to make sure the cam doesnt lift off the head at the back.

It wont lift too high coz of the locating journal/boss at the front of the cam. so it will need plenty of lube while turning it. It may help to back off the tensioner too.

alrite this is the plan, bust her in gear, handbrake on, remove rocker gear, pressurise each cylinder individually without turning over engine to change valve springs, then when that is complete, swap cam over, check valve piston clearances then shim
