tip #1
to save mucking around with the chain tensioner, have someone on standby to help pull out the old cam and lay down the new cam whilst you hold up the cam gear tight. Dont let the tenison off it, or you will have to remove the power steering pump, bracket & reset the tensioner which can be a pain if it seizes up and needs to be removed |

Remove the tensioner, remove accel cable off the throttle body, remove rocker cover, cable tie chain to sprocket, un-bolt cam sprocket, take off rocker gear ( watch for the HLA's falling out ), note where the hole is for the cam sprocket, take cam out, place in replacement cam, line up the hole to sprocket, place sprocket on cam, loosely bolt sprocket to cam, put rocker gear on watching for HLA's falling out and sitting in wrong place and getting caught on valve stem tips, ect.....
Tighten cam bolt, CUT THE CABLE TIE OFF, DON'T LET IT FALL INTO THE ENGINE. Reset cam chain tensioner, and place it back in. put the rocker cover back on, and accel cable. Start engine, it may rattle a little, filling up galleries in rocker gear, wait a few minutes, then hold RPM up to about 1,500, if ok, test drive. If you know what your doing, take about 1hr to 1&1/2 hrs.

*Pro tip for cam change players.*
Re HLA retention, Spray a bit of degreaser on top of rocker arm, wipe off oil and degreaser, get masking tape, you know the paper tape you use when masking up before a spray job, as you undo and lift the rocker gear, when you have room between HLA and valve, put a bit of tape round the rocker and HLA to hold it in place. You will find out real fast why you hit the top of the rocker arm with degreaser.

do you definately have to remove the timing chain tensioner? ive read a few tech docs but resetting and installation seems a little unclear...

I have always removed the tensioner, easier than doing a guide replacement if you move the chain teh wrong way when it is loaded.

You're better off doing it right rather than have headaches later on. Such as stretched chain or seizing auxiliary shaft (or whatever gear it runs behind the chain cover).
