Hi,
just a quick question about the intake manifold. i need to change a gasket in mine pretty soon, its on the way out. do i need to use gasket goo when doing it back up? and do i need a torque wrench or just to do it up bloody tight? is there anything which i can f**k up doing it? lol silly questions i know, but just want to make sure all my bases are covered before i start pulling s**t off. cheers nic |

Your tighening up a bolt in to an alloy head, so the have to be torqued. Wheres the oil leak??

na, there is air getting into the system through a busted gasket.
already got it all sussed out by the mechanic, he bandaid fixed it, but neither of us had time to get it fixed properly before i had to leavbe town again. so i just want to fix it up properly |

I use permatex No3, but usually you're pretty right with them without using any goo.
I've done at least 15 heads on E series, never torqued an intake manifold, good luck getting a tension wrench underneath if you do, especially at the back lol. Can i ask what's wrong with your gasket? It's not something that usually lets go on these things. |

Yeah, after doing a couple, Ive never used a torque wrench. true they're going into an alloy head, but a torque wrench is impossible, even with the engine out of the car.
But don't overtighten the bastards. They're only little and can snap.. and then problems arise (Ive done it). As for gasket goo, don't bother.. they normally seal just fine when you put a new gasket in. But other than that its straight forward.. And yes, have fun with those bolts down the back.. and the bracket if its still there.. might need to take the starter motor out. Cheers

Go buy a 10 mm ratchet spanner, it's the best way of doing the back f**k.
You can't get a socket on them at all, and you have little movement using a std spanner, it feels like it's going to take forever, and usually does lol. |

i have done the gasket on my intake manifold, near number 6, big gaping hole too lol, sounded a supercharger under revs but made the car run like s**t

yeh, mine might be leaking,
i checked the bolts randomally one day, and i could move the spanner with 1 finger, couldnt tighten about 2 of them tho, no way to get the spanner onto them. the torque setting is 20nm IIRC.. so hand tight. dont hang off the spanner but a decent kink with 1 hand should do it could explain my fuel economy. you can hear a decent sucking noise from my car when revving it, so might have exhaust leak or intake leak. in 2 minds what to do with my car. tossing up saving to the ba T or going manual, body kit etc.

Prolly an idea to replace the gasket between the two halves on the BBM aswell? Not hard to do this one at all...

sorry bout the belated response.
thanks for that guys. I have to wait one or two weekends and then ill get into it. Yeah, ill count how many knuchles i leave behind too! lol. and walker, from what the mechanic explained to me, its the gasket on the #1 cyl which has worn out and leaking air. Has a terrible sucking noise at idle, runs rough as guts and sounds like a v8 when you stand behind it!! |

my favourite way of doing a bbm gasket swap is with a stubby rachet spanner.
remover the whole airbox(lower half aswell) and the intake assembly. remove battery cable (due to proximity of back bolts to starter motor. undo the bottom bolts first as that way there is no load on them and hopefully they will spin out once cracked.. if your really clever you should be able to get your arm in along the bottom of the bbm (ie from the front) to get most of the bottom bolts.. i think its 3 &4 that are hard on a coil pack car. 5 & 6 do from underneath. once you have figured out how to relocate you elbow,, undo the top bolts and pull the manifold back 5mm or so pullold gasket out and drop new one in. dont use sealant, it isnt necessary (that and it makes it harder to get it back out later.) put a couple of the top bolts back in and resume fight with the bottom ones. itll take a while especially if you havent done it before, and be prepared to bleed. theres many sharp things under there have fun -mitch

well it could be a party if you have a beer for each bolt undone?? however after half a case putting it back on may be a little more difficult
