Intake plenum can have a bit of oil on the bottom half of the intake plenum...however not too sure if it's meant to bake on like that on the upper half .
I think the fastest way to get it shiny would be via a Dremel (or similar) with a lot of attachments. To get into the smaller spaces, you'll need to do it the old fashion way unfortunately. If you don't have a Dremel...it will take a lot of elbow grease and sand paper to get it smooth and sexy. I gave up after using 80grit on one of the humps and saw the massive task ahead...if you get it done, brownie points to you .

the manifolds get oil inside through the pcv and the top half gets stained from the oil and oil vapour that goes into the throttle body from the rocker cover breather...
so its pretty normal.. but as the engines get more worn the oil vapour gets worse. |

Nothing much you can change really...best is to replace the gasket between the 2 halves. Check the actuator that controls the butterflies to make sure it isn't sticky. Also you can check the butterflies themselves to see if they close properly. Nothing much else you can really check.

I've just done a lot of work on my car in this area. Fortunately for me, I managed to buy someone else's project manifold, which had been ported (lower half only) and smoothed somewhat inside on both halves. I got it as an unfinished project and just gave it a tidy-up - most of the work had been done with a die grinder. I gave it a clean in a hot caustic wash (Robowash machine) and then it was ready to paint. I painted it because I don't have the time or patience to polish the thing. I used heatproof paint over engine primer.
I also fitted a catch can to reduce the amount of oily crap that accumulates in there. Most of it comes from the PCV valve which feeds directly into the manifold, just below the throttle body. Some oil may have come from the air filter, a lightly-oiled K&N panel I was running until recently. The catch can is plumbed between PCV and manifold, using fuel hose and mounted between the washer bottle and the manifold. Regarding injection, what I found is that fuel injectors are rated in lb/hr at a set fuel pressure; if you raise the pressure you can increase the flow rate. In my EF with 19lb/hr stock injectors, I fitted standard 21lb/hr AU injectors and a 350kPa regulator to give me just over 24lb/hr flow rate, and saved the expense of going out and getting 24lb injectors off the shelf. The added bonus is the improved four-point spray pattern offered by AU injectors over the stock ones with their single-jet setup. BTW, shop around. I managed to do the complete injection upgrade, ported manifold and catch can setup for a total $150... bargain!!! Ported manifold Catch can location Finished injection and manifold upgrade

80 grit will pull all the crap off pretty quick. When I was doing my mags I stayed with 80 grit until I was through all the pits and rubbish then pregressively worked down to 400 with some water. After that was hours and hours of Autosol...

Depends if your using wet n dry or just plain old dry sandpaper.
I use wet and dry and i find that if i keep rinsing the paper you can make it stretch, which helps when your gonna end up using at least $50 just in paper.

Sand with wet and dry. Helps with keeping it cool (for your sake, not the manifold) and it also removes the excess metal as you go allowing better sanding. Also much easier with wet and dry IMO than dry sanding.
