After i read somewhere every degree celcius you lower your intake temp it adds 2-3 hp, and doing some sums i worked out you could gain 20-30 hp by intercooling, is this a viable option or would it just make the intake rediculously long ?

I'd say it would make it ridicously long, though I think you gain something... I can't remember if it was a bit of power gain up top or on the bottom, but to be honest not even worth the amount for a 20 - 30hp.

would not be worth te effort as the area most prone to temp increases is between the airbox and TB above the BBM, any gain you pick up via intercoolers would be lost as the air would still be subjust to that temp raise, short of increasing the air velocity so it spends less time in the heatsoaked area the same air volume would still be subjected to the temps, although the air that travels through the intercooler would be a lower temp to start, it would need to be significantly lower in the first place, and cooler than atmospheric temp thats for sure..

actually another interesting trick I have seen, particularly on Jags, is cooling the fuel, have seen fuel coolers intergrated into aircon systems, but again alot of work for small gains, but if you decide to go down this path I would be interested int he results.

if you were going to install a turbo down the line yeah sure put a intercooler you would have run it were it would normally site BUT pod filter on one side as if you ran it up near the exhaust it would be one step forward, eight steps back as it would be sucking in hot a** air of the exhaust area....
but the intercooler would have to close to the throttle as extended the instake hosing longer would i assume would make throttle response s**t house as it would have a larger and slower journey to the engine.... ^^^ only assuming never down it personally

You're better off with CryO2 cryogenic air intake....
costly but it'll lower intake air temp up to 60%. the down side is, you need to refill the Co2 bottle every time it runs out. probably more suited for heavily modded cars anyway.

i'd be worried about the restriction it takes on the engine intake,
some people with boosted motors loose upto 3PSI in an inter cooler. a small water to air cooler would probably be more feasible than a FMIC. |

when you cool down hot air it become more dense, thus you loose a few psi.. it's just the intercooler doing its job. But then you can get s**t cores that are to restrictive, thus the pressure drop. As its been said before dont put an intercooler on your N/A car, there's no gains to be had.. unless your doing it for wank factor

I was thinking that...getting a 3" steel intake bent and then ceramic coated or whatever it's called would be a better option. Probably cheaper too. phong =P~

only good on boosted cars as the boost coming out of the turbo and directed toward your intake is very hot... unlike the AMBIENT air that is sucked up the intake straight to the throttle body of an NA engine...
