Is Coolant, Coolant. ie Truck Coolant the same as Car Coolant?
Could I Flush my system and replace with the high ended brand name red coolant? Is it true Green Coolant and Red Coolant won't mix as they become a jelly substance with some heat? Anti-Freeze, Anti-Boil Coolant the same as off the shelf coolant or does it have to be specified? .....

DO NOT MIX coolants EVER
this is what causes the "brown rust like water" buy 1 brand and stick to it and keep some spare if u need to! yes flush and replace with whatever coolant u wish, the toyata stuff is one of the best and cheapest around most coolants now days contail anti boil and anti freeze

yeh i work at a spare parts place, and the number of times i get asked which coolant i recommend to top up with..
I always tell them if they don't know what they used last time, they should flush and fill with fresh stuff..about 70% of people still grab a random bottle and add to the existing fluid in the car And don't whatever you do, buy the cheap s**t (usually under 5 bucks for 5l) sold at supermarkets and some auto shops. |

When flushing the cooling system, use a cleaner, ie Loctite. That is the one I use.
One of the first things a corrosion inhibitor does it to coat the metal parts in the cooling system. This is why a chemical flush is used before putting new inhibitor in, especially if the previous brand of inhibitor is unknown. It is also important to have the correct mixture of water to inhibitor ratio. With some "Truck Coolants", you can't use in a system that has aluminium components in the cooling system, ie: cyl head, water pump, etc. I don't like using HAT or OAT inhibitors. I like good old fashion Ethylene Glycol, with a concentration of 950gm to 1100gm per litre.

if you do this you may as well be adding green cordial to the radiator

Do a complete flush and clean.
Fill with the brand that has "caaught your eye'. Water wetter is a good option as well but if you use it make sure it is compatible.

prestone yellow coolant claims to be able to be mixed with any other coolant red or green or other and only requires normal water.

Coolant should always have anti-freeze and anti-boil in it. Some people get confused about the difference between Radiator Inhibitor and Coolant - there 2 different products - Coolant is anti-freeze/boil, while Corosion Inhibitor stops rust and that only. Tectaloy actually say that you can mix all there coolants together as they are made structuarly similair - so you can mix there green with there red (it's on about page 5 of there Blue Book). You shouldn't mix different brands as said above as they're made using different things - I can't say that I'd trust a bottle that said it could be mixed with other brands. |

Thought i would just bump this so i didn't start a new topic...
We have a TR/TS Magna, seems to loseing coolant (but not leaking or coming out of head etc etc) we are running green coolant / water the temp guage sits half way and the engine seems to get warm really quickly it has a new thermo stat and bleed the system for air etc... NOW if we put some high end red coolant in would it lower the temp somewhat?

I dont know what the fuss is with "anti-freeze, anti-boil"....ive mostly just used water in my cars, because screw paying $50 for coolant only to loose most of it if you have to drain your system or have a leak...
I have never had overheating problem from using just water...if the car has been overheating its due to something else like a blocked radiator or fan not working... the only problem with using water is the corrosion, and this can be stopped by using inhibitor.... IMO thats all u need
