Is it? Just revving it in nutrel?

What a strange question haha. No it's not bad for the engine to rev in neutral. Obviously revving right up to redline and engine speed cut for extended periods wouldn't be doing the engine any favours, not to mention looking like a bit of an ar-tard if you're trying to get attention.

haha nah I ment for just the occasional rev in the shed either by me or Dad. I kinda thought an engine had to be under presure to perform, but I suppose a dyno doesnt put it under much pressure. Does it?
Either way, thanks for the answer.

course a dyno puts an engine under load.
Otherwise the thing would just redline in a few seconds. The whole point of a dyno is to make it like driving on a road except being able to record the power and its all safe.

Has there ever been a case where a car on a dyno has somehow grip and taken off? lol

Thats why they strap cars to dyno's.
free revving an engine can be bad, a short burst won't do anything bad - but look at it this way, compare yourself running flatout up a hill and flat out down a hill. Doesn't take much for you to eat s**t running flatout down a hill.

The straps work well. The idea is the car has no momentum just spinning the wheels on the rollers. no momentum = no movement, The straps ensure that stays that way. If the car gets a chance to move it'll of course pick up momentum and get moving quickly.
The straps are also there to help with tyre grip. not enough load on the tyres and they'll spin up on the rollers themselves, resulting in wasted rubber, and a lower reading. There's a vid on youtube somewhere, showing a drag car getting loose on a dyno, and taking off into the crowd. Messy.

cars coming off dynos is a rather boring thing to see. if your unlucky you'll break something in the driveline. other then that, the ones i've have simply stalled the engine.

This is why they use straps to hold down the cars
