Maybe, could also be the adjustment of the shifter or the shifter bushes are very worn.

Yep that'd be the switch, not an expensive part to replace, and easy to swap over yourself, just be careful with that little shaft that the switch sits on, (you'll know what I'm talking about when you take the old one off).
Push that into the box and it's bye-bye gearbox. Transmission place charged me $20 to fit it.

I went to Auto one they said they could only get a genuine one and it was $105 this doesnt sound right to me do you recon Mals, Supercrap, or Repco would have a cheaper aftermarket one?

That price is about right. I know Repco can order them in, but I don't think they're much cheaper. There called Inhibitor Switch. Often fail if there's an oil leak mucking them up. There is a way to bypass them though... |

I've successfully bypassed my inhibitor switch (due to an auto to manual conversion)...it's simple as, you need one piece of wire about 30cm long and about 2minutes of spare time. Let me know if you want more info

You'll find there are 4 wires on the connector - two are for the trans feedback resistor, the other two (red/blue & black/green) are the starter lines, you can temporarily put a jumper on the back of them to enable the starter.
IIRC, when Fuzion was regularly on this forum, he said you could actually clean the switch. I got rid of my auto when I did the conversion, so I can't test this info out - maybe someone could confirm or deny this.

yes u can! BUT not if the car is staying auto! i really dont think that the car should be able to start in D also the inhibitor switch runs the reverse lights! so get rid of that and no reverse lights cop pulls ya over and checks ya f**k!

There are more problems than that. As others have said in other forums, the switch tells the ECU what gear your in. If it goes badly wrong, the ECU can think your in Reverse (when your not), or similar problems. Thats extreme, but possible.
Im still looking at the cleaning option : A little concerned about the seal when I put it back together though. Nigel |

Permanently removing the NSS is a bad idea as you've gathered - still can jumper the starter connections as described with the switch still fitted.
I'd say your best bet is to go new - looks like the plastic goes brittle with age, so a 2nd hand unit you can never be sure how long it will last. Best bet maybe to try some auto trans places - I know locally I got a T5 g/box component a third of the price of the ford dealers quoted price - got it delivered heaps quicker too.
