can't be the air intake should be sealed unless the oil was coming from the air filter to catch particles

how could the cops tell you have a k&n in your car as they are not allowed to open your airbox and they cannot legally make you open it either?

well how do you think people get away with it.
i had a deep thought about what i have found out and realised that if the regulations were enforced 3 quarters of the members cars on here would be off the road, mine included. its a scary thought when you actually think about it.

not wishing to highjack this thread but here is some more info from vic roads regarding intercoolers etc.
(c) Intercoolers that are larger than standard or have a different mounting location or are added where none were originally fitted, are permitted only if no other changes to the intake system have been made. In other words, you may have a pod filter or modified/added intercooler, but not both. Any sensors integral to the original intercooler or intake system must be retrofitted and be in the correct location. Note: aftermarket turbocharging kits that include intercoolers that have been type tested (ADR certified) for the model vehicle are permitted. Documentary proof must be retained to substantiate this. (d) Airflow meters must not be disconnected. They may be relocated, provided they are functionally equivalent and are in the same approximate location. (e) Modified or aftermarket plenum chambers or throttle bodies are not permitted.

Exhaust systems Exhaust systems must comply with Queensland legislation which includes the following conditions: • Exhaust headers (extractors) may be fitted to any motor vehicle, provided: they do not foul any part of the steering, suspension, brake or fuel systems all fittings for emission control equipment (E.G.R. valve, oxygen sensor, pipes and so on) are incorporated to ensure the vehicle maintains compliance with Australian Design Rules for vehicle emissions exhaust systems must continue to comply with relevant legislation or Australian Design Rules for vehicle noise. • The exhaust outlet must extend at least 40mm beyond the furthermost outboard or rearmost joint of the floor pan that is not continuously welded or permanently sealed which could permit direct access of exhaust gases to the passenger compartment, but not beyond the perimeter of the vehicle when viewed in plan. • The exhaust outlet, if to the side of the vehicle, must discharge to the right hand side of the vehicle and downwards at an angle to the horizontal of not less than 15 degrees and not more than 45 degrees. • The exhaust outlet, if to the rear of the vehicle, must discharge at not more than 10 degrees above or 45 degrees below the horizontal. • All exhaust and muffler systems must be free of any leaks or mechanical faults and should be adequately supported.

this is for our WA members, sorry guys but i don't like fellow members being s**t on by the authorities.
What can I modify without approval ? Many minor vehicle modifications can be carried out without specific approval. However, they are still subject to compliance with the Road Traffic (Vehicle Standards) Regulations 2002, Road Traffic (Vehicle Standards) Rules 2002 and the Australian Design Rules (for date of manufacture and vehicle category). Please note: This isn't an exhaustive list of modifications that don't require approval. Please contact us to check the status of your particular modification. Visit our When Is Approval Required? section for details on other common modications which do require approval. Modifications you can make without approval include: Tyre size and aspect ratio Additional lighting Single tone air horns Air conditioners Air shock absorbers Alarm systems Badge bars Gearbox (pre 1976) Mud spats and pebble guards mesh stone shields for wind screens and lamps Body markings and speed striping Rear-view mirrors Roof racks Radio and stereo systems Sunvisors Optional manufacturer seating seat belts for pre 1969 cars (no full harness types) Stabilise bars Torque rods and traction bars (not semi-tramp types) Venetian blinds and other internal screening systems are allowed subject to a clear view to the rear Remember, generally, no modification may be carried out if it : reduces the strength of the vehicle body reduces the controllability of the vehicle reduces the safety of the vehicle http://www.dpi.wa.gov.au/licensing/1882.asp ps. Modified exhaust systems Modified exhaust systems may be fitted to passenger vehicles provided the following conditions are met : The system is efficient. The exhaust system does not pass closer than 25mm to fuel tanks or the body floor. The system does not foul the body work or limit axle travel. No part of the system projects below the rim lower edge The system terminates behind the last body panel. Systems on the left hand side of the vehicle do not deflect gases directly to the left. The noise level of the modified system must not exceed the noise level of the manufacturer’s original system by a noticeable amount. Side exhaust systems (sometimes called lake pipes) are not permitted. The system must be effectively supported and must be free from cracks and leaks. Where the vehicle is subject to ADR 27A - Emission Control. Extractors may be fitted, but the features of the original manifold must be maintained (i.e.. hot air transfer tube, manifold to air connection). Vehicles subject to unleaded fuel control emissions (ADR 37) must remain as specified by vehicle manufacturer.. Noise level will be the most important factor in assessing any exhaust system. Close attention will be given to this factor during examinations and in the on-road situation.

the Queensland regulations are a bit vague but in essence it states that a replacement exhaust system must comply with the original regulations in force when the vehicle was manufactured. and an air filter must be fitted but it does not say what is allowed and what isn't allowed. http://www.transport.qld.gov.au/resourc ... an05v2.pdf
