CAn Anyone help me?
I recently installed a a pre-programmed J3 chip (4TBD) into my 95' Fairmont (197,000Km) Initially with the mods i had done the power was awesome i was loving it, but as i was just going through a drive through, the car had trouble keeping its rev's up, and as soon as i got out on to the road the car just set itself into "limp mode" and putted home. i got home and removed the chip, and now the car is back to normal..... minus the power!! HAve i missed something? is there a run in period? as i installed it at about 2 and it was stuffed by 6!! or have i got a faulty chip?!?! I would appreciate some advice

Can you tell us where the chip came from and what brand it is?
There's no run-in period, it's just 'plug and play'. Were the terminals on the ECU cleaned properly before installing the chip? It's possible that the programming was corrupted, but hard to say what caused it. I just installed a TI Performance chip and it works great. I followed the installation instructions and had no problems.

how well did u clean the J3 port?

i also got mine from T.I performance, me and my mat put it in.
The ports were cleaned throughly as my mate is an electrician. so i dunno maybe it was the chip.

 Replied in your other thread, more than likely dirty contacts especially if you havent hit them with fine grit sandpaper. I've heard a disposable nail file works OK too! If you have problems shoot me an email and I will take a look at it for oyu. Jason

i had problems with a chiptorque before in my el, the contacts were too thin and were not making proper contact, they had to be thickened with solder... be careful when sanding the contacts.

soldering is a last resort. most people dont realise how much clear is on the pins, it takes a bit of cleaning to get it all off.

I used a bit of solvent and a small flat head screw driver to chip the clear coat off...worked without damaging the pins.

I had the exact same problem and yeah as Jason said it was dirty contacts..........and no you dont realise how much clear coat is on there............Argggggggg!!!
I removed the top cover for the ECU - 6 screws as its easier to get in there and clean it properly

I used contact cleaner, but I don't suggest going out and buying a can solely for this purpose, its about $20 a can at d**k smith.

edit: just did some reading about TI performance.
can any power be gained from a stock xr6 engine with one of these chips? |

What tune did the chip have on it? if the car is a 95 fairmont doesnt it have the xr6 motor and computer anyway?
Or was it a custom tune for your car?

I put a TI Performance J3 into my EF and I'm delighted with it.
Car runs much better and economy has improved heaps. For just $200, it was some of the best money I've spent on my EF. I was surprised how much varnish was on my ECU contacts. It just seemed to go on and on. Make sure you follow the instructions provided. It will take about 30 minutes to do it properly. I used a small flat blade screwdriver, followed by the 600 grit sandpaper. Clean up with metho on a rag.
