ok so i made a post lastweek about the car overheating, well a new radiator fixed that problem, but a new one has surfaced thats driving me nuts, at cruising speed the temp will settle at a touch under 90, but every 10-15mins itll flare up to 110-115 deg celcius, and as it jumps up the needle on the gauge gets wobbly, it jumps around back and forwards the whole way up to 110-115, then drops straight back to 90 after about 2 secs, does this on the factory gauge and on the aftermarket one i put in it yesterday wich is a mechanical gauge, has anyone ever seen anything like this? so far ive replaced: radiator, thermostat lower and upper housing, all hoses, radiator cap. the only thing i havent touched inthe cooling system would be the waterpump.

A mate of mine suggested maybe headgasket and combustion gas is getting into the system?

any help would be greatly appreciated

cheers

chris

Some temp guages can give weird readings at times. It did with my old EB so I put a tacho dash in it and the problem went away.

yea i thought it may have been the cluster so i replaced the temp sender for it, still did the same thing, so i bought a 50 dollar speco mechanical temp gauge and that does it aswell, i guess the main question is will it flaring to 110 every now and then do any damage? i put a bottle of chemiweld through ityesterday to see if it is a headgasket thing but it made little to no difference

bloody cars lol

my ea is the same. i ended up buying a water pump with a modified impeller. and it came with a doodad which changes how the bypass works. this means that now it only fluctuates while cold, and after 20 or so k's is pretty much still.

so ive taken the thermostat out, and its stopped fluctuating all together, although i think the temps might be a bit to high. at cruising speed on the freeway its sitting about 65-70 and in trafic its sitting 75-80, doesnt fluctuate any more than that. without a thermostat, i would think it would run heaps cooler than that, i noticed even the factory gauge is sitting higher than it did the last time i tried no thermostat. my next move is to replace the waterpump and throw some thermos on, i cant do anymore than that the rest of the cooling system is brand new, so all that really leaves is maybe a dodgey headgasket or its pulling air from somewhere

3 different thermostats, all the same problem, two different gauges, two different senders, same readouts, all the cooling system ahs been replaced bar the waterpump/clutch fan assembly. its been flushed about 4 times in the past week, and always use castrol radiator inhibitor when i refill it (2 200ml bottles)

i think im going to off myself soon its driving me insane

is the car running rough or any thing when the gauge jumps if not dont panic most motors run at close to if not over 100c the idea of coolant isnt to lower engine temp it is to raise the boiling point of water to stop it evaporating(water turns to steam at exactly 100c) so engines will run and be cooled to around 90-100 even 110 is ok with some engines as long as coolant content is ok
