Yesterday I replaced the oil in my EB2 4 litre, I was using Shell Helix Plus 15/50 and a valvaline filter. This is only the second change since i bought the car so I though i'd try something else. I bought penrite hpr30 20/60 and a ryco filter. So straight after the oil change when i started the car it was quiet, no ticking, by the time I got home (I was at my mums 30 mins) it was ticking and doesn't go away when I increase rpms. Now should I go back to the Shell oil where things were good or try say hpr15. Oil pressure is a little higher, say 1/2 a bar, going off the gauge on the dash.
Any input would be great, will most likely change the oil today back to the Shell. Thanks Ben Car has 232000, Some Cam?, Extractors and Exhaust and Air Intake. |

Possibly the oil is too thick, not letting enough in or out of the lifters. I always use Castrol Magnatec, it's a bit thinner (5w/40 from memory) but as long as your engine isn't too worn out it should be fine.

that is happening to mine too... i used the shell stuff for "older motors" after using mobile semi-synth for the last 3 changes... I'll be changing back after flushing out that shell sludge

I had a EA with a Recon egine that had a tick after oil change (Castrol GTX2) took back to mechanic who said it was just a sticky lifter. He dropped the oil added same brand again and through some Wynnes additive (for sticky lifters). Engine was good after about 100kms of driving it.

said it befor and i'll say it again. don't change what oil you use unless you're having problems with it.
go back and get some Shell Helix Plus 15/50 and a valvaline filter. put that in and your problems will go away |

Well the Shell is back in and got another ryco filter, the tick comes and goes now, I might try some of that wynns lifter stuff someone mentioned. How much to these buggers (lifters) cost to replace, sounds like maybe 2 car making the noise? and how hard is it?
On another note bloody sqealing fan belt, its been tightened like 3 times, it stays good for about 3 weeks then its back. It's the alternator belt. How could I solve this for good? Thanks Guys! Ben |

Ben don't get worried about the noise yet. when you drain a sump there can still be up to 500ml some more, oil left in there. wait till your next oil change and see what happens after that. also on the next change use a new filter too |

Fanbelt stuff is called Beltgrip (CPC make it I think)
I'd just get the right new belt |

Soap will stop the squeal from your belt. Good old palmolive gold type stuff. Rub it on the belt. Not much. This even stops the 3 inch primo belts on Harleys from squealing. If your'e a pom, ask your neighbour for some.

I get the same thing too, with my EL after an Oil Change. But it goes away after I usually add that," Wynns- Noisy lifter additive " I beleive I bought it at Big W. I think you might be able to buy it at K mart as well not sure. But definately Auto section of Big W
